Tech Consultant

August - October 2021 • Vancouver, WA

What I liked

The location was right next to my apartment complex, so the travel time to get to work was very small.

What I wish was different

I wish the pay would have better reflected the amount of responsibility I had as compared to other roles. Working at the front lanes would have paid the same amount as a tech consultant except that role didn't have to be constantly on the move restocking, laying out shelves so they were displayed better (zoning), answering frequent questions, and covering a large area of the store while still being paid the same. The company also had an issue of not enforcing mask policies despite the amount of signs saying they were required, even having it be mentioned over the phone. Even with a mask station up at the front of the store, customers without masks were still welcomed in by management at the front and the general employee culture was to not tell customers to wear a mask in fear of being fired.

Advice

I would recommend not taking a "specialized" job at Target as long as they're paying the same amount across multiple roles despite the level of responsibility and the density of tasks between roles. If you value public health and following things such as mask mandates, I would *highly* recommend against ever working for Target.

Software Engineer Intern

June - August 2022 • Minneapolis, MN

What I liked

What I liked most about interning at Target is the effort that the company puts in to keep all of the interns connected. Even though the internship was remote, Target worked tirelessly to host sessions for interns to network with each other and with employees at the company, and to find out more about Target's community. Interns were also provided an opportunity to travel to Minneapolis to explore Target's campuses, to learn more about Minnesota, and to facilitate in-person interactions that make those connections more sincere.

What I wish was different

Advice

One piece of advice that I would share to someone interested in a software engineering internship at Target is to be upfront about your interests. Regardless of which team you get placed on, everyone is Target is actively rooting for you and is open to helping you explore your interests and build up your skills. One significant aspect of the company's culture is learning, and there are plenty of resources available to help you further identify where you want your career to go.

Executive Intern

September 2022 - May 2023 • Minneapolis, MN

What I liked

I loved the corporate culture and coworkers that I worked with. The utilization of cross-functional teams and the balance between work and living. Being open-minded and eager to help others with enthusiasm. There were tons of mindfulness practices, great focus spaces to work in at HQ, and opportunities to connect with others. I was able to grow in multiple areas of my professional and overall life experiences. I was also able to network within Target and present my project to my teams and their bosses.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have had a little more organization and guidance. It felt like everything relied upon myself which was important and great for person growth in professionalism and ambiguity. However, a little more structure would have helped me be all the more successful and understand my expectations quicker.

Advice

I would advise those who experience this opportunity to explore target in its entirety and not take anything for granted. There’s so much and so many to learn from. Ask questions when you’re unsure or just need clarity and be willing to get out of your comfort box to grow.

June 2022 - September 2023 • Westlake Village, CA

What I liked

I love my team at my location, especially my managers. They are supportive and accommodate any accessibility needs. I found community and friends among my coworkers. I enjoy interacting and chatting with guests at the register.

What I wish was different

Especially during summer, it gets very busy and hectic so it would've been nice to have more cashiers and more help to move lanes along quicker.

What I liked

Not much. Repetitive simple tasks under time pressure from management.

What I wish was different

I wish pay would've been better considering almost every other employer raised pay, but target hasn't in years.

What I liked

I liked how friendly and respectful the management was. I always knew I could go up to them if I had a problem and that they wouldn't get upset. They were clear communicators and worked hard to make sure you got the schedule you wanted.

What I wish was different

I wished I could've worked more midday shifts because I did a lot of closing shifts which meant you probably didn't get home until midnight.

Advice

I would say you should definitely try to work here. The employees are really nice and it's a generally happy environment.

Guest Services Associate

July 2023 • Lawrence, NY

What I liked

I enjoyed my time at Target because of the people that I worked with as well as the job itself. My coworkers were always very helpful and encouraging, especially the first week I began working there (as I had many questions to ask). I also like that I was able to do more than just what my listed occupation was. This allowed to try most of the available roles and decide on what was best suited for me.

What I wish was different

I did not have any complaints about the job, neither do I have anything that I would specifically change about the job. If anything I would changed my situation outside of the job. While working, I was also enrolled in a summer class which forced me to limit my hours. However, I do not taking this class as it was definitely beneficial.

Advice

I would tell anyone looking for advice that they should take any job experience that they can get their hands on (even in retail) rather than waiting for the perfect internship. My experience at Target gave me the opportunity to commit to something outside of school and any clubs I am a part of. It provided me an opportunity to prove to myself that I can work hard and enjoy the results of my labor. In my time there, I received the #YouAward for the month of August which is the equivalent to an employee of the month award, as well as more general performance award in the form of a check. Even more importantly I was able to make important connections with people that I otherwise would have never met.

What I liked

The upper management was nice and understanding, I felt like they cared.

What I wish was different

I wish they gave you more time and weren't so strict with their rules. At times it was extremely stressful and people would be rushing around. My manager would get very stressed and would often take out that stress on her team members, which didn't help with anything.

Advice

I would advise that you go in understanding that people will be freaking out but you just have to do your best and it will be okay.

What I liked

In my job, I have to fulfill online orders that people place to be picked up from our store and go around each aisle and find those items for each order batch. Each batch could contain 15-180 items depending if we shipped the order from store, or had a guest pick it up from store. I was always on my feet which I loved. I got my steps in everyday and got to have so many different experiences such as customer service, time management and not hitting compliance when in the middle of an order.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had more time to do my orders. The range of items that we got could be from 15-180 items sometimes. Sometimes the order items would be in bulk (such as 100 crayons), but sometimes we would only be given an hour for 45 minutes, which seems like a lot of time but I would barely have enough time to bag everything in my order batch.

Advice

I would 100% recommend this job honestly. It teaches you good communication skills, time management, customer service, patience, teamwork, and problem solving. One piece of advice I would share from this experience is that every job will teach you what you need to know, and can teach you well.
