Target

Cashier

June - September 2019 • McKinney, TX

What I liked

I liked how invested the managers were in their employees— they constantly stressed that they would rather work with you to improve your situation than have you leave. They let me take an education leave when I moved to college so I didn’t have to quit, and now I have a stable job every time I come back home.

What I liked

The people who ran the target were really nice people and had an effective way of talking and always dealing with the team.

What I wish was different

Sometimes the scheduling would be a little weird because it was paper schedules, so I think it should of been all electronically done.

Advice

When it comes to work retail, you got to have patience, and you got to have people skills for sure. You talk to a LOT of people.

I enjoy working there because I can help individuals with their clothing wants and needs.

What I wish was different

Nothing really, except the long hours but it pays for school.

Advice

Make sure you have the heart for it, It is an awesome job but takes a lot of your mental strength. Of course it is nothing like a job you can have with a degree in something you are interested in but it sure is a start.

What I liked

Target has changed its way of fun in finding the floor. Team members are given areas on the floor they are “business owners.” This gave me ownership over an area and motivation to be more dedicated to my job.

Cashier

June - August 2019 • Quakertown, PA

What I liked

That the job wasn't too high stakes or anything earth shattering, there were some usual issues that come with retail jobs but nothing too often. Shifts and hours every week were consistent and not exhausting for a summer job.

What I wish was different

A little bit less of a reliance on having to get customers to sign up for the company credit/debit card, while they told us we couldn't be fired for not getting them, there was always a "Well you don't have to but..." in the air that did lead to times that felt like there was too much pressure on me and other coworkers.

Advice

If you're able to, be honest about what specific work hours you want/shifts, I've had other jobs where I was more reluctant and ended up getting used despite what I had asked for but was afraid to talk about to get changed.

Clothing Stylist

May 2019 • Novi, MI

What I liked

I liked that there was a lot of personal autonomy, and the managers did not micro-manage me, as they did at my old job at Old Navy. I also liked that I earn $13.50/hr, and that my pay has increased to $15.50/hr. It was really awesome that they paid us that much for a unskilled job.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have gotten more hours

Advice

Just go ahead an apply! I didn't think they would accept me (I don't have a ton of retail experience), but I interviewed anyway, and I got the job.

Barista

July 2017 - August 2019 • Fredericksburg, VA

What I liked

I loved the people I worked with and being able to connect with the guests that would come in. I developed a connection with my team leads and they helped me a lot during my first couple months of working there.

What I wish was different

I do wish that there would have been more consistency with hours and the schedule making as sometimes they would do hour cuts with no warning until the new schedules were posted.

Advice

One piece of advice I would give is to always keep yourself level headed when dealing with difficult customers or people as it makes it easier in the long run.
