Target Textile Engineering Research Lead

May - August 2019 • Dartmouth, MA

What I liked

It was nothing like anything I have ever done before. I am a bioengineering student and I was asked to lead a research team to propose a solution to a textile chemistry issue that target is facing in the children's pajamas field. As a microbiologist this was so out of my comfort zone, but I figured why not give it a whirl. My team wound up being selected by target to receive a $15,000 research grant to produce a prototype of our proposed solution. It was an awesome summer working with engineers from various fields gaining tons of new skills!

What I wish was different

The interactions with the supervisors at target- they were not offering much aid to us and feedback was always incredibly delayed. We were on our own entirely, it was beneficial in terms of being independent but direction would've been helpful.

Advice

Go out in a whim, say yes to everything you find interesting! Expanding your network and skill set is always worth it!

Executive Intern

June - August 2019 • Northfield, OH

What I liked

I loved the team; they were super kind and really wanted to see me succeed. I also liked how structured the program was (10 week program with a set schedule). Towards the end of the internship, I was able to get more creative in what I wanted to do. Individually, I created an incentive-based program for employees to increase productivity and efficiency, implemented a training schedule for the front-end, and managed the back-to-school section which caused an 18% increase in sales. I loved that this program was structured but also geared towards helping me grow as an individual.

What I wish was different

Retail is very hard work, and I learned quickly that I was not cut out for the manual labor. I wish I could have been more involved in crunching numbers and forecasting the development of the company. At the store level, which is where I was located, this is not possible. I think I would have preferred an internship at headquarters.

Advice

I think this is a fantastic internship for anyone who wants to go into management and specifically retail. They almost always hire their interns, and offer competitive wages and benefits. Growth is easy to achieve within this company; in fact, mostly everyone who was "higher-up" started out as an intern. My advice is: make sure management and retail is something you want to do before accepting this internship.

Retail Stocker

May 2015 • Saint Paul, MN

What I liked

I enjoy taking personal pride in seeing that my department looks good for the guests and helping people with finding things throughout the store. Interacting with the guests and my coworkers is what makes my job rewarding to me.

What I wish was different

I wish that I was paid more per hour than I currently do seeing that Target is one of the biggest companies in the world.

Advice

Just to take problems on with a smile, there is always going to be someone or something that is going to upset you almost on a daily basis, I would recommend to just take things as they happen and not to let setbacks upset you and just move on to solve the problem or to brush off whatever someone did or said to you that was upsetting.

What I liked

When working at Target, I really enjoyed meeting a lot of new people and learning about retail. Target was my first retail job, it was always very busy and there was always something to do. Mainly just cleaning, organizing and leading customers in the right direction! Lastly, there is nothing better than receiving your own money, that you worked for. That was a big highlight for me.

Beauty Consultant

June - August 2019 • Southington, CT

What I liked

-Working with beauty products and being able to give out free sampling -Receiving monthly gratis to try out new products -Employee discount (10%) -Pay was more than minimum wage ($13/hr)

What I wish was different

-I wish the employee discount was more than 10% off. It also should be used with any type of payment method (ie. you can only use cash, Target Redcard, Checks with the discount. No debit/credit cards) -They give you 18 days to request time off. If you do it later (like a regular two weeks), it won't be eligible -I wish you could access you Target portal at home to request time off, not have to wait to do it in store -The 90 day "trial period" for new employees makes it hard for college students who may want to continue working at another location near their university, or for when they want to return in the future. Instead of transferring, you have to quit your job, then re-apply, then quit again, etc.

Advice

If you want to work at Target for the summer, make sure to apply as early as possible so you can try to get all 90 days in. hat way, you can transfer to another store instead of quitting at the one you have and then having to re-apply.
