What I wish was different

Working is hard to do when going to school. That is all there is to it.

Advice

Make sure they know that school is your priority, because they will work you as much as you let them. It can be good and it can be bad. You have to make time for yourself at some point.

Cashier Supervisor

August 2018 • Milford, OH

What I liked

I like how flexible Target is with my scheduling. They take into consideration that I am college student, so during the summer they will fulfill however many hours I want, and during the school semester they will work my hours around my school schedule. I like being able to form strong connections with other people I work with. I’ve made friendships that I’m very thankful for, and they wouldn’t have happened if I didn’t work at Target.

What I wish was different

There are a lot of changes that have been made to Target regarding frequent apps we use to access things at work, and different things on the register. As a cashier, it would have been nice to know ahead of time the changes being made, rather than finding out on our own and having to learn from someone else right then and there on how to access/use something.

Advice

One piece of advice I would like to share about this experience is don’t be afraid to step out of your boundaries. I was given a better position from being a cashier, to a cashier supervisor. This was something I never pictured myself doing, and I was worried I’d fail. I stuck with it, and I learned, and am still learning, multiple things about my job. This has given me more confidence in the workplace, and overall in general. Don’t be afraid to take on a role that will benefit you and help you grow in the long run; you won’t regret it.

Store Executive Intern

June - August 2019 • Gainesville, VA

What I liked

I like how the team was super helpful in answering any and all my questions. I was able to see all departments in the Target store and spend time with a bunch of team members and leaders in the building. I learned from each individual and by the end of my internship I was able to be a "leader on duty" multiple times and make certain store decisions. I liked how I participated in leadership meetings and had a voice. Great culture.

What I wish was different

My feet hurt from all the walking...wish there was more time to sit down.

Advice

Come into this internship with a yearning to learn more and to develop your leadership skills, otherwise you won't get much of out it. Ask for feedback and make sure your experience is "global" aka make sure you're seeing all departments and seeing the connections between each of them to the overall store and business. Lastly, wear comfy shoes.
