UPS (United Parcel Service)

ISM Co-op

February 2018 - October 2019 • Parsippany-Troy Hills, NJ

What I liked

I liked the environment of the office. The office was built a few months before I started working there, so I got to experience a more modern work flow with more collaboration than a traditional office. The office was laid out with a more "open" cubicle design; the cubes were roughly 3-4ft tall, so you could easily talk to and collaborate with your neighbors. I liked how hands-on my internship was. I was put on real products, working with real teams for products that would be used by customers around the world. I ended up designing and building an application from the ground up with the help of other interns. I also liked the hackathon they hosted for us, as it gave us opportunities to work and network with other teams and individuals around the office.

What I wish was different

I wish the team I was working with was more equipped for the jobs given to us. I had no mentors to ask questions, and no other in house workers other than other interns to ask for help. From what I've heard from other interns, my situation was a bit of an anomaly, however it lead me to a lot of valuable information that really benefited me in the long term. For example, I learned how to read documentation in order to learn the tools, which is a very valuable skill to have. I also wish the teams would make better use of the tools given to us (i.e. Version Control). There was a bit of a gap in knowledge with our team, as the developers on our team were equipped for a different set of tools than the ones we got tasked to work with.

Advice

UPS makes a great foot in the door for less experienced workers. They don't expect you to know everything, which is great for students who have never worked internships prior to this one. I would recommend researching and learning a lot of the tools used on your own time, as we were never given any real time to "train". Make efforts to learn, collaborate, and really make use of what you're given to work with.

What I liked

Well UPS offers assistance with those who are trying to go back to school. After a year you have full health and dental in benefits, even though it is part-time work. The early morning hours are very conducive to working one's schedule around going back to school.

What I wish was different

One thing that I wish had been different was just the general morale of the place.

Advice

It's hard work, but if you are willing to stick it out there are more rewards to be reaped then you could initially anticipate.

Payroll Intern

June - August 2019 • Coppell, TX

What I liked

I liked the fact that interns are highly regarded and are able to join meetings with upper-level management. Your input is also important to them and you work on projects that will actually be used when you leave. There is an opportunity to make an impact and you actually get to learn what it is and why it's needed. Many of the employees have been working there for a long time together and are very family-like.

What I wish was different

I wish there were more chances to interact with other interns in other departments to see how everyone effects the bottom line.

Advice

Be friendly to the people and comfortable asking lots of questions. You aren't expected to know anything so don't feel dumb and any cost!
