Research Fellow

May 2020 • Moscow, ID

What I liked

By it's nature, working in research pushes you to face new challenges each day. No two days are the same creating a dynamic work experience where you are constantly growing. I love the challenge of learning each day and the hands-on experiences that research provides in the laboratory.

What I wish was different

Advice

Learn to become comfortable with the unknown. Unlike coursework, the whole point of research is that you cannot simply look up the answer, and that can be daunting. However, that is what makes research so rewarding; learning and discovering a concept on your own is a fulfilling experience.

Legislative Research Scholar

August - December 2020 • Moscow, ID

What I wish was different

I would have liked to have a mentor in my field of study for this role. This person would have been able to give insights into the research process of which I would otherwise be unaware.

Advice

Work patiently and in small parts. This position can be daunting at first when you consider the level of information that you must locate and synthesize. However, the advisor is very helpful and will be able to guide you through the general process.

Robotics researcher

May - August 2020 • Moscow, ID

What I liked

I enjoyed the independence of the project and the problem-solving skills I had to utilize. The project was interesting and had a real-world application, which was refreshing.

What I wish was different

I wish I had the chance to work with more people. Due to the Pandemic, I had to work remotely at home and talk with colleagues over the internet to communicate. It got old and slowed down the prototyping process.

Advice

I would say that you should be fresh on your CAD software skills, you'll need a lot of them. I'd also say that talking with other researchers about the project is not a bad thing. In fact, you'll find something out you wouldn't have by just working alone.
