I loved being able to camp all summer and travel around Idaho. I also gained fundamental field skills and rangeland plant ID skills. I also learned how to dig soil pits and identify soil horizons to explain the plant community around the area.

Just do fieldwork! It's so much fun compared to any indoors job. You see so much beautiful country that rarely anyone sees and you get paid for it!

Custodian

May - August 2018 • Moscow, ID

What I liked

Working on the university campus, I didn't have to make a long commute and I was familiar with the locations needed for the job. I worked with other university students, it was nice to have something in common to talk about. I liked that I could take time off that I needed off. I also liked my set hours, which made it easy to plan for other activities I wanted to do outside of work.

What I wish was different

I wish the administration worked more collaboratively. There were often times where nobody knew what we were supposed to be doing, we lost time we could be working. I didn't like how some of the supervisors talked about other supervisors very negatively and within hearing distance of us, very unprofessional.

Advice

Doing manual labor isn't the worst job. It takes some adjusting to but its nice to not be stuck at a desk all day.

Undergraduate Researcher

May 2016 • Moscow, ID

What I liked

Since the summer of my sophomore year, I have been doing research in an analytical chemistry lab-I enjoyed learning new techniques that I would not have learned in my class labs, and then applying them to my own research projects.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have had more time to spend in lab. I travel a lot during the summers, which is nice, but I love being in lab as well.

Advice

Do not assume you know everything, especially when working in a lab with chemicals that could present potential hazards. Always ask questions if you are unsure of something, even if you think it is a stupid question.

Undergraduate Researcher

June 2018 • Moscow, ID

What I liked

I liked having strong supervisor direction on the project while also maintaining the freedom to work the hours best suited for me. There was a strong sense of independence in the project that encouraged critical thinking and problem solving while our PI was still around to help us when need be.

What I wish was different

I worked two jobs over the summer, the second an unrelated off-campus job, so my hours were split up between the two. I wish that the lab position would have been my only position, as I would have learned more from in lab experience, both about my project and about the professional environment.

Advice

I'd strongly encourage all students to look for summer research opportunities at their universities, if applicable to their majors. It's a fantastic resume builder, and prepares you for future work in your field. This is also a great time to continue learning while you're not in school.
