The professional connections I have made in this position have been monumentally helpful in terms of career progression, career clarity, and a fantastic example of a healthy work environment and team.
What I wish was different
I understand the limited scope of the research projects I have been part of, but I wish I was able to learn a few more diverse transferrable research skills.
Advice
I suggest anyone looking to pursue an experience like this to make as many professional connections as early on into it as possible as it has been a huge skill that I have learned, especially since it is one that can be transferred to any industry or experience.

What I liked
That I met really great people in a subject I didn't really understand.
What I wish was different
I think Covid really impacted my internship, but I was able to finish online. I do think Handshake could do a better job at navigation when it comes to internships. I found mine, but like on page 40 and a lot of the ones under the medical field was for business majors.
Advice
I would say is to talk to your internship advisers and your major adviser when it comes to discussing hours. Know what needs to be done to get your required number of hours. I needed 120 hours and towards the end I kept working and working more along with studying for finals because I didn't have enough at the time. I survived in the end, but I highly recommend planning your schedule with your school and volunteer hours so you get enough.

What I liked
As part of the BRAiN program at New Mexico State University our first summer internship experience is at the University of Colorado in which we present our 8-week research project at the Diversity Poster Session at the Society for Neuroscience Conference on behalf of the Annual NIH BP-ENDURE meeting. This was a really fun and different experience, I got to meet so many people and present my research as an undergraduate! It also opened my eyes to the life of a graduate student, and so much more.

Advice
Choose based on the best mentor and environment, rather than the research, it pays off in the end.

What I wish was different
I wish that there was more interaction with other students in different labs.
Advice
If you love doing science and research, this is a very good opportunity.

Biology Research Intern
June - August 2019 • Denver, CO
What I liked
The employers were excited and helpful to have the group of interns. The mentors actively taught us about the research they conducted and were engaged in discussions of biological topics. The research itself was individual based. Each individual, in a different lab, picked what they wanted to research and presented the findings at the end of the summer. The experience was very collaborative and informational.
What I wish was different
I wish the interns would have been able to get together and collaborate more. I constantly worked with my mentor and their lab, but I also wish I could have worked more with my peers/fellow interns.
Advice
The internship is open to any year in school. I completed this internship as an incoming sophomore, while everyone else was an incoming senior. That being said, I did not have the background information of some biology topics to the degree of my fellow interns simply because I had not taken the course yet in my education. I encourage everyone to apply for this experience, but understand that the knowledge learned in courses is definitely applied in this research!

The environment was very conducive to learning and acquiring a vast skill set.
What I wish was different
I wish we would have had more time to network on the campus and spend with our cohort.
Advice
Time management is key. There was a lot of work involved with this opportunity but the only way to maintain balance in the midst of this, my job and recreational activities were to be very productive in the time I had in the lab.

Advice
Don't be afraid to start at the bottom and never shy away from doing the menial tasks around the lab. You don't always get to do exciting things, bit making sure that your solutions and equipment are well maintained and stocked helps out when you actually do experiments.

Pharmacy Student intern
June - August 2018 • Aurora, CO
What I liked
The preceptor I was paired with was amazing, and the UPP program helped me to have this internship in an area I was really interested in. Through the summer I gained a lot of experience and connections with people that will really help me pursue my career as a pharmacist.
What I wish was different
I loved working in clinical research, but it would have been great if I could have seen more areas of pharmacy outside of that as well.
Advice
Go in with an open mind. Even if it wasn't exactly what you expected, you will learn from the experience and take away new ideas and perspectives you wouldn't have seen otherwise.
