GlobalFoundries

Talent Branding Intern | Human Resources

May 2024 • Atlanta, GA

What I liked

I liked how intentional GlobalFoundries (GF) was with their interns. I was looking to acquire a role that truly allowed me to work on meaningful and exciting projects and GF delivered just that. They provide ample space for development and creativity while also providing mentorship and guidance for support along the way.

What I wish was different

Advice

All of the individuals I have had the opportunity to work with have been easy to talk to and have great personalities. So, I would advise to feel comfortable asking questions and gathering feedback from employers within the company on whatever you do.

Process Engineering Intern

May 2023 • Essex Junction, VT

What I liked

I have spent 2 summers interning at GlobalFoundries and have learned so much about the semiconductor industry and more broadly, manufacturing. This has been a great experience and has taught me so many things that are not covered in-depth in my engineering coursework. I have been able to work in two different departments (Ion Implant and Etch) and implement process changes that have a true significant impact on the department and have direct cost savings and productivity benefits. I have also been able to meet and network with so many people with all ranges of experience and knowledge.

What I wish was different

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions when learning about the semiconductor manufacturing process! It is a very complex and unique sector and most of what people know is from what they have experienced in their job role. Sometimes your mentor(s) will forget that you are new to the industry and need more of an explanation on various concepts but everyone is always very kind about it and will help you understand what is being discussed!

AME Intern

May - August 2023 • Malta, NY

What I liked

Company culture During my internship at GF, there were several aspects that I absolutely enjoyed. The company culture was unlike anything I had experienced before. The sense of collaboration, support, and camaraderie among the employees was truly remarkable. It made me feel like a valued member of the team right from the beginning. One highlight was the amazing cafe on the premises, which not only served delicious food but also offered great prices and discounts exclusively for GF employees. This made lunch breaks not only enjoyable but also affordable. Moreover, the location of the company was a pleasant surprise. Situated amidst serene surroundings, the office was surrounded by a network of picturesque hiking trails. I often took advantage of these trails during my lunch breaks, allowing me to refresh my mind and recharge for the rest of the workday. This blend of natural beauty and professional environment provided an excellent balance that greatly contributed to my overall experience at GF.

What I wish was different

While my time at GF was largely positive, there was one aspect that I wished had been different. Given my academic background in materials science, I was hoping to work on more hands-on tasks that directly aligned with my major. However, I was assigned a coding project during my internship. While I understand that a lot of the manufacturing processes at Fab8 are automated and involve coding, it would have been more fulfilling for me to engage in projects that leveraged my expertise in materials science. Despite this, I recognize the unique nature of the company's operations and the potential limitations in offering tailored projects for every intern. The experience did give me insights into the coding side of operations, which could prove useful in the future.

Advice

If I were to offer advice to future interns at GF, it would be two-fold. Firstly, don't hesitate to take the initiative and ask for more projects when you're getting started. It might seem overwhelming at first, but going the extra mile in terms of work and involvement can go a long way. I found that by taking on additional responsibilities, I not only enhanced my own skills but also showcased my dedication to the team. This effort likely played a role in securing a return offer for the following summer. Secondly, I would advise interns to be open about sharing feedback with their managers. The company's receptiveness to feedback was evident throughout my internship. Whether it was discussing project preferences or suggesting improvements in certain processes, my manager was genuinely interested in hearing my perspective. This open dialogue not only fostered a positive working relationship but also demonstrated the company's commitment to the growth and development of its interns.

Finance & Business Operations Intern

May - August 2023 • Malta, NY

What I liked

I loved that GF has employee resource groups (ERGs) that interns could be involved in. There were also many fun events/tours and networking opportunities. Every day on-site I felt included and welcomed by the awesome people that worked there.

What I wish was different

I wish there were more considerations for interns that didn't belong to an engineering department (Finance, HR, etc.) even though we were a minority amongst the many engineering students.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask for help and utilize your resources!

Process Engineering Intern

May - August 2023 • Malta, NY

What I liked

Every aspect of the internship was awesome and superb. I liked the fact that I was able to work independently on the projects assigned to me and of course with the guidance and support of my mentor and my entire team members. I also appreciate the fact that I received the important trainings needed to successfully complete my projects. The social events created a very good balance between work and play and this is one unique thing about the GF internship program.

What I wish was different

Advice

It is very important to effectively communicate and work closely with the team assigned and always ask questions in areas not so clear, no one is an Island of knowledge.

Process Engineer Intern

May - August 2023 • Malta, NY

What I liked

At Global Foundries, I enjoyed working with a diverse team of people in the metrology department. I had extensive support through my mentor and manager, as well as through the Malta Internship Program. The company culture was positive, the intern perks were generous, and I felt overall well supported through my project.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more 1-on-1 time/support with the engineers, so I could get more of a inside look of how they do they work. This would include seeing how the process engineer controls lots in Siview, builds recipes and inhibits recipes, and other general day to day work.

Advice

I advise looking at all pieces of the puzzle, whether they apply to you or not. Even if you're a process engineer intern, it is still an important and a worthwhile pursuit to engage with the equipment engineering team. If I had more time or opportunity, I would have certainly liked to interface with the other modules to see the similarities and differences in the process engineers

Equipment Engineering Intern

May - August 2023 • Malta, NY

What I liked

I got to do a ton of hands on work, both in the fab and in my department's shop. My projects were a good balance between being isolated enough that I could do it without being super integrated into all of the systems and meaningful enough that I knew that what I was doing had an actual on my team and the company as a whole

Engineer Planning and Business Operations Intern

June - August 2023 • Malta, NY

What I liked

I loved the Planning team as a whole. Each member of the team was more than happy to explain their day-to-day tasks and provided training on every aspect of their jobs. I learned so much in the short amount of time that I was here. My mentor and manager did a fantastic job at assigning me to the correct trainings and projects to get a broad understanding of the semiconductor industry.

What I wish was different

The only thing I wish was different was more cross module networking. Most interns stayed with their mentor and manager, but I feel like it could be greatly beneficial to have interns move around the departments to understand what the whole company does rather than being stationed into one place.

Advice

Enjoy every minute of it because the summer seems so short when there is so much happening. Attend as many of the intern events and SLT speakers as you can to truly feel like you got the best experience you could have.

Etch Equipment Engineering Intern

May - August 2023 • Malta, NY

What I liked

This was my second summer internship at GlobalFoundries and both experiences were extremely valuable! This summer I got to see the project that I worked on last summer benefitting my team after being in effect for a year, which was very exciting! Additionally, I received a very hands-on, technical project to work on this year and experienced a completely different aspect of the engineering module. GlobalFoundries gives interns the opportunity to work on real company projects that lead to valuable contributions within their teams and there is always something new to learn!

What I wish was different

I wish that I had more industry-related technical knowledge coming into the internships as there was (and is) a lot to learn, however my team was very accommodating and willing to teach with first-hand experience!

Advice

Ask as many questions as you can!

What I liked

I liked my co-workers. Everyone is willing to help you and if that person can't help you then somebody else can. I enjoyed working inside the FAB as well as in the office. I was given many different projects to work on which kept the internship interesting. I also enjoyed the events that GF had for their interns... ice cream social, mini-golfing, bowling.

Advice

Ask questions. You get out what you put in.

What I liked

The team I worked with was very helpful and nice. They answered all my questions with enthusiasm and introduce me to the facility. My mentor helped me work through the steps of my project, scheduling weekly meetings for the team to help me with any issues.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been able to work with other interns more often on collaborative projects.

Advice

The facility is huge, and it will take time to learn the basics. Don't hesitate to seek guidance.

Maintenance Technician Intern

June - August 2023 • Malta, NY

What I liked

I liked the engaging community that you are included in once joining GF. The significance of our work is justified by our incredible support system.

What I wish was different

I wish I had got a bit longer of an experience to truly understand everything that GF does, but only so much can be done in one summer.

Advice

A piece of advice I'd share would be to stay as level minded as possible, this industry can be overwhelming at times, but in the long run, it's completely worthwhile.
