Supply Chain Intern

What I liked

Very independent work with a lot of experience in several well known programs. Very relevant and transferable skills that can be used anywhere. Also worked with great people that helped me build a great professional network.

What I wish was different

I do wish there was a little more guidance and structure to the experience I found myself with a lot of free time here and there in between downtime with the projects I was handling.

Advice

Make work for yourself. Constantly be looking for work to do or finding ways to help others and make things easier for everyone else there. If you can streamline a process and make the work easier for everyone there that does it everyday you will be remembered.

Facilities Engineering Intern

May - August 2018 • Malta, NY

What I liked

Exposure to manufacturing environment, with ability to learn and grow in multiple areas.

What I wish was different

Management was poor, structure of intern project and responsibilities were unclear.

Advice

Make sure that you are self-driven and take personal responsibility for whatever you are working on. Your manager and technical mentor will not always be there to tell you exactly what you should be doing, so it is important that you take ownership of your project.

Chemistry and Materials Science Intern

May - August 2018 • Burlington, VT

What I liked

Great opportunity for more lab experience in a corporate setting.

What I wish was different

n/a

Advice

Due to the complexity of the production of semi-conductors, there are so many aspects of the manufacturing process that it is hard to understand exactly what is going on. That being said, all I can recommend is to ask as many questions as possible. It will help you get a better feel for what you are supposed to do and will help those around you as they are forced to learn more about the processes to answer your questions.

Senior Engineer

April - November 2018 • Albany, NY

What I liked

It was great opportunity to grow professionally and personally. All my extensive PhD experience allowed to earn good reputation among my colleagues from day one. And even though work in industry is completely different from the research assistant one, I enjoyed it immensely.

What I wish was different

The camaraderie environment is not as present in industry as it is in the university lab. I wish people were spending more time together and communicated more closely during work hours.

Advice

Do develop soft skills and you personal professional network through all possible channels.

What I wish was different

Given the COVID situation at the time, it would have been difficult, but I wish we had more opportunities to meet other interns at the site.

Advice

Process Engineering Intern

May 2023 • Essex Junction, VT

What I liked

I have spent 2 summers interning at GlobalFoundries and have learned so much about the semiconductor industry and more broadly, manufacturing. This has been a great experience and has taught me so many things that are not covered in-depth in my engineering coursework. I have been able to work in two different departments (Ion Implant and Etch) and implement process changes that have a true significant impact on the department and have direct cost savings and productivity benefits. I have also been able to meet and network with so many people with all ranges of experience and knowledge.

What I wish was different

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions when learning about the semiconductor manufacturing process! It is a very complex and unique sector and most of what people know is from what they have experienced in their job role. Sometimes your mentor(s) will forget that you are new to the industry and need more of an explanation on various concepts but everyone is always very kind about it and will help you understand what is being discussed!

Advice

Ask a lot of questions, people are really nice and knowledgeable here.

Maintenance Technician Intern

June - August 2023 • Malta, NY

What I liked

I liked the engaging community that you are included in once joining GF. The significance of our work is justified by our incredible support system.

What I wish was different

I wish I had got a bit longer of an experience to truly understand everything that GF does, but only so much can be done in one summer.

Advice

A piece of advice I'd share would be to stay as level minded as possible, this industry can be overwhelming at times, but in the long run, it's completely worthwhile.

Finance & Business Operations Intern

May - August 2023 • Malta, NY

What I liked

I loved that GF has employee resource groups (ERGs) that interns could be involved in. There were also many fun events/tours and networking opportunities. Every day on-site I felt included and welcomed by the awesome people that worked there.

What I wish was different

I wish there were more considerations for interns that didn't belong to an engineering department (Finance, HR, etc.) even though we were a minority amongst the many engineering students.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask for help and utilize your resources!
