The environment is great. It has been one of the most productive summers for me. Corporate culture is everything I expected after reading about it. I experienced a culture of helping others and taking care of each other.

What I wish was different

The training week is a robust and well-organized event. I wish some parts of training is provided in the first week to allow interns familiarize with the organization.

Talent Acquisition Intern

What I liked

The internship program is very inclusive and network driven. Avery Dennison is all about connecting with everyone and continuously building your network. I enjoyed working with my team and my projects and the independence I was given to complete these projects. My team never made me feel like I was ~just another intern~. Instead, I felt like I was apart of the team and I could bring my true self to the table and voice my thoughts and opinions.

What I wish was different

Nothing really - this internship has been great overall!

Advice

One piece of advice I would share is to always ask questions. Ask as many questions as you can about the business, about the department, about your team, about other teams etc. because that will help you understand more about the business, your team and what Avery Dennison is all about. There will always be someone to answer your questions! When I mean someone, I really mean someone. Whoever you may ask questions to will give you a dedicated answer and if they don't have an answer, they help you find someone who may know the answer!

Process Engineer Intern

What I liked

My experience with Avery Dennison has been wonderful, and what I like most about Avery Dennison is their Diverse Culture. I was more than welcomed to the company, from the beginning I was exposed to every part of the company, from working with operators on the floor to working with Senior Process Engineers and Managers. I am working for the Labels and Graphics Material department as a Process Engineer at Engineered Films Plant. My opinions and thoughts were valued from the beginning and people were always ready to help. I was given responsibilities throughout my internship which was a great experience for me because not only has it given me professional world experience but it has expanded my knowledge of working with Senior Process Engineers. This was my first internship and Avery Dennison has welcomed me in a wonderful way and helped me grow in the professional environment.

What I wish was different

Nothing, my experience with Avery Dennison was great.

Advice

One piece of advice I would share about this experience is always be curious to ask questions, everyone is ready to help. Talk to people, from operators to managers, everyone has some kind of knowledge that can be helpful for your time at Avery Dennison. I would also suggest exploring different plants because exploring can help you come up with questions.

What I liked

I really enjoyed the freedom to work on different projects of interest. My manager challenged me every day to try my hardest and really push myself. The projects I worked on actually contributed to the department and the company as a whole. The intern program was very organized and expectations were set from the very beginning.

What I wish was different

I wish we had more opportunities to go into the office and choose a few days here and there to work onsite.

Reach out to employees and management in different departments to learn about what they do and why it's important.

Operations Process Engineering Intern

What I liked

One aspect about this company that really stands out is that everyone is willing to help and is really nice about doing so. As an intern, I had the opportunity to explore other plants rather than just the one where I got assigned my internship at which I thought provided the best learning experience in terms of seeing how the company functions as a whole.

What I wish was different

I wish the internship could have been longer as a way to not be so rushed on projects, but I fully understand that we are limited to the summer. In the time that we have, I learned and experienced a lot, but that also felt rushed at times.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions and set up meetings with those who that are have manager positions or have much more experience. It does seem daunting and intimidating at first, but everyone is really excited to meet the interns and are always there to help you when you may need it.

My experience at Avery Dennison was phenomenal! The internship program is very inclusive and the coordinators really try to encourage networking and reaching out of your department. The projects I worked on were both challenging and stimulating as I was able to hone critical thinking skills learned in school. I highly recommend this company during your job/intern search.

More interdisciplinary projects may be helpful between interns.

Advice

Reach out to upper management and set up 1:1 meetings to learn more about a possible career paths. Visit other sites and take tours of different departments within the company.

Operations Intern

What I liked

As an intern, I got an incredible amount of freedom to approach projects the best way I saw fit. By having the space to take on problems independently, I learned valuable skills in critical thinking and collaboration that will last long after my internship is over. Every person at Avery Dennison made me feel welcome and were more than willing to help if I had any questions. Moreover, since Avery Dennison is a global company, I got the chance to work with people in different countries which was an invaluable experience.

What I wish was different

Since I was a summer intern, I only had 3 months to finish my projects. Naturally when you first join, you will spent a solid 2-3 weeks learning the basics of the business. So overall, the net time you have to finish your projects is limited. Managers are understanding of this which is really great. However, I wish I could've spent a little more time (maybe an extra month) so I could space out my projects a little more.

Advice

There are two main things I would advice people who are interested in interning at Avery Dennison. 1. Don't be afraid to reach out/ask questions to anyone in the company (not just in your plant)! They are all very kind and will go the extra mile to help you. Don't be afraid to ask a question because of a person's title (manager, directors, etc). It can be intimidating at first but once again, everyone is willing to help. 2. Keep an open mind. Don't restrict yourself within the scope of your project(s). If you have an idea that does not directly relate to your project, don't be afraid to bring it up to the managers or team leaders. These conversations could end up leading to some great improvements.

Operations Finance Intern

What I liked

I loved how much they were willing to work with me. Due to COVID-19 we could not do the internship in person, so they worked with us to do it virtually and still give us an awesome experience! I was able to talk to a lot of higher-ups and get some insight into their job and what they like about it. I was also able to talk to the other interns to share my experiences.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have been able to go into the office, but that would not have been permitted due to safety reasons.

Advice

If you are looking to get a great idea of what a job in the finance or engineering field is, this experience would be great! Avery Dennison has so many internships and they do an amazing job of helping you understand what it is like in the real job world. If you do end up working there, I suggest you give it 110%! There are always managers being involved in your work and if you make yourself seem worthwhile, they will almost always offer you another internship or a position in their LDP program.

What I liked

I’ve had a great experience working with Avery Dennison. Each day I am learning new things and am challenged by the various projects I am working on. The company definitely values their interns and knows how to use their skills effectively to give a meaningful experience to the student and benefit to the company. I have always had a heavy workload and could see how my work was progressing project goals. Through the intern program, we had the opportunity to learn from presentations by leaders of different functions, professional development trainings, and ELS trainings. Teams were really supportive, and we also had assigned mentors and a very engaged HR team. Working as an R&D co-op within the Medical business unit, I have been able to do lab testing to help make design decisions for new dressings utilizing an antimicrobial adhesive technology, analyze data, write protocols for new studies, and contribute to documentation for regulatory submissions. Also, I've been able to engage with engineers within manufacturing to understand the whole production process. I love going to work everyday and I would highly recommend working for Avery Dennison!

What I wish was different

I had a great experience; I can't think of anything I would want to change.

Advice

Get to know how your role fits into the wider organization and get to know your cross-functional partners. Understanding how your work impacts the wider team can make your day to day activities feel a lot more rewarding. Also, knowing how your work impacts partners in other functions can help to prepare you to work effectively on cross functional teams and make more informed decisions.

Sales Intern

What I liked

Avery Dennison has a very supportive and encouraging company culture. There is always someone to lend a helping hand while you are learning about their products and business. The sales internship provides great experience in relationship selling as you gain a lot of exposure to current accounts through CRM updates, sales calls, and sample requests. This allowed me to learn how product recommendations were made and how service requests could be handled. Was also able to assist with lead qualification process which helps to bring in new accounts and drive demand for our product. Enjoyed that I had personal responsibilities that were valuable to my team, but was still able to jump on team calls and make connections within the company.

What I wish was different

Nothing really, was unable to attend the original office as my experience was virtual through COVID-19 pandemic. However, Avery Dennison is extremely flexible in switching to virtual internships and equipping all employees with the proper resources to still be successful.

Advice

The products are very technical and Avery Dennison serves a wide array of customers in markets such as Food/Beverage, Pharmaceutical, Chemical, Automotive, etc. For this reason, each product recommendation will be different from the last so take the time to ask a lot of questions to understand why certain label materials are chosen for certain applications. Also, make sure to ask questions about how our customers serve their end-users as the value chain for this industry is critical to understand. Soak up as much knowledge as possible!

What I liked

Avery Dennison is a values-based company with really great people. They provide interns with valuable experiences and meaningful projects. The HR team does a great job of connecting interns and new hires with each other, with learning tools, and with leaders throughout the organization. I had two internships with Avery Dennison, one at the office in Mentor, OH and one at a plant in Greenfield, IN. Both summers were incredible, and I'm excited to join the company full-time.

What I wish was different

I wouldn't change much about my experiences! For some students, waiting to find out your location until the spring may be frustrating, but I think it's nice that they really put a lot of thought into your placement.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions and ask for more work! There are a lot of great people to meet and work with at Avery Dennison.

What I liked

Avery Dennison is a phenomenal organization. The company is values based and truly invests in their interns. Each of the summer interns is given a mentor and a meaningful project. My assignment was to fill a full time position in the short time that I was here and worked on adding another adhesive coating line to the facility. I could see my direct impact within the plant that I worked, which is something that is really important to me. During the first week on the job, I was given the opportunity to network and meet employees in other business functions. Avery Dennison encourages interns to reach outside of their comfort zones to get to know all facets of the business.

What I wish was different

I would not change anything about my experience. There were times where I was challenged by the tasks/work in front of me, but getting comfortable with the uncomfortable is where we do all of our growth!

Advice

Ask questions and attend meetings with those outside of your department to enhance personal growth and become educated about the business. Figure out what your personal values are and evaluate them based on the company's values to understand whether or not you will have a positive work experience- that goes for any organization!

What I liked

My entire experience at Avery Dennison was unforgettable. From the very beginning, I felt welcomed into the culture and fit right in with all people in different functions of the business. I had a ton of exposure to different departments at Avery Dennison and I am thankful for the expertise and guidance I received as a result. One of my favorite parts about working this summer was the company and the people here want me to succeed. That being said, the work I completed is strongly valued and will be used to better the company as a whole. I am proud of the work I completed at my time here and am thankful for everything I learned. Would highly recommend this internship program.

What I wish was different

My experience in market research was amazing - I would not change much about the program at all. The only thing I would change is allowing for a further notice in what department / location / manager you'll be in and working for. Other than that, 10/10 experience!

Advice

One important piece of advice is to ask questions and talk with as many people as you can. Especially at this company, a lot of people work cross-functionally and there is a lot of flexibility between different departments. That being said, talking with anyone and everyone is important - even if it is only for a few minutes. Everyone that I have met here genuinely wants me to succeed and do well - so creating connections and asking thorough questions will be beneficial to you in the long run -- for your project and for your personal professional development.

Commercial Finance Intern

What I liked

I was more than happy with my experience at Avery Dennison. The internship program exceeded my expectations! My projects played such an important role to the Commercial Finance team this summer, as a new business intelligence system is taking place for reporting, analysis, and data warehousing. I felt that my work was valuable to the team and I was always given constructive feedback. Within my role, I learned the importance of working cross-functionally, problem solving, working in a team, and communicating well with others in a professional setting. My time as a Commercial Finance intern not only improved my finance acumen, but allowed me to gain valuable experience with a business intelligence tool. Avery Dennison is an incredible company that pushes you to succeed and I would recommend the opportunity to any college student looking to start their professional career!

What I wish was different

There is not much I would change about my experience at Avery Dennison. There were a few setbacks when gaining access to programs and/or systems I needed to complete standard work and projects at the start of my summer, but otherwise there is nothing I would change!

Advice

My advice would be to network as much as possible while spending your summer at Avery Dennison. Your colleagues are there to help you grow, offer feedback, advice, and steer you in the right direction. I scheduled 1:1 meetings with leaders in different departments and those who hold the Leadership Development Program positions to hear more about what they do and their experience so far at Avery Dennison. Asking questions to those with experience is so valuable and important to learning more about the company and potential for success!

Operations Engineering Intern

What I liked

Avery Dennison really values their interns. I was given projects that not only helped me develop my leadership, communication, and problem solving skills, but it also had a real impact on the business. I worked in a cross-functional team consisting of engineers, maintenance workers, operators, and safety staff. Everyone I talked to was so open to answering questions and helped me learn in a hands-on way. My supervisor did a great job of being clear with what was expected of me. As a company, Avery Dennison is committed to upholding their values and has a very inclusive and collaborative culture.

What I wish was different

I had an absolutely incredible experience. The only thing I wish had been different would be finding out where you'll be located sooner, but that's such a small part of it. Overall, I genuinely looked forward to coming in to work every day and it was tough to say goodbye to the people at the end of the summer.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions! I've always had a positive response, even to questions I had to ask more than once. Also, reach out to people and get to know them even if they're outside of your department. If you're in a plant, spend as much time on the floor as you can and talk to the operators and maintenance staff. They helped me a ton with my projects.

What I liked

I loved the progressive and innovative company culture at AD. There were so many people invested in the interns' personal and professional development, and it showed with each employee who tried to help me in some way. I had the opportunity to work on meaningful and impactful projects, as well as present my work to Avery Dennison Leadership at the end of the Summer.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had discovered my passion for Sales earlier, and had build more of a network in that department that I already did. Other than that, I have no regrets.

Advice

Your internship is a 3-month-long interview. It sounds cheesy, but could not be more accurate. Everything you do, someone is noticing your efforts/ lack thereof. Putting in that extra hour here and there or just going out of your way to build relationships will take you far.

Summer Intern

What I liked

It was my second time working in the Labels and Packaging Materials lab (I worked there June-August 2017) and I absolutely loved the atmosphere. It's like a family and everyone is so welcoming. I loved being able to learn more about labels and packaging materials. I earned a lot of experience in the manufacturing process.

What I wish was different

Nothing. It was a great experience, and because it was my second year back in the lab, they gave me more serious work, where I was able to sit in on meetings and my supervisor was a bit more hands-off where I was given more responsibility while she was traveling/out of the office.

Advice

Look at every assignment with positivity. Some tasks I was given were monotonous or less exciting but they still taught me valuable skills nonetheless.

Controls Engineering Intern

What I liked

Avery Dennison is a Fortune 500 company with over 30,000 employees all over the world, yet it feels like a small company. Everyone was very friendly and my mentors were interested in helping me achieve my career goals rather than goals that they had in mind for me.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had had an opportunity to talk to my mentor before starting as he was not familiar with who I was and what I was capable of and therefore started me off on a project that I could have done perfectly well but was not in line with my career goals. He later found out what I knew and immediately gave me a different project.

Advice

I would say that the most important thing is to be transparent about your career goals. I was very transparent and feel that I have a much better chance of having the career that I want to have at Avery Dennison after college.
