What I liked

The culture at Zebra is really supportive. My supervisors taught me so much, and I was able to meet with full-time employees in all functions of the business. Additionally, my work gave me exposure to many areas of the business, so I was able to learn a ton over the 12 weeks.

What I wish was different

My internship was structured so I touched many different projects, but didn't have 1 long-term project to fully commit to. I wish I had some sort of longer-term project to work on in my spare time.

Advice

Take the time to meet tons of different people! During my internship, I had 1-1 conversations with ~25 full-time employees in so many areas of Zebra. It helped me learn about future career paths, as well as grow my professional network.

Advice

It's important to maintain a well relationship with your manager and to work beyond the jobs given. It's helpful to take on new projects to learn and to gain new skills, but don't take on projects that do not genuinely interest you!

What I liked

Even though it was remote due to covid-19, I made so many friends and connections. Zebra’s culture is very welcoming and fosters innovation. I was invited back for a full time role and love how Zebra lets you take projects and run with them. My job does not feel like work, it feels like an engaging puzzle I’m always solving different ways. The great thing about Zebra is they value the work life balance too. We have summer hours where you can leave at noon Fridays if you make the time up earlier in the week! We also have paid access to online training platforms we can use at our discretion like LinkedIn Learning.

What I wish was different

It would have been nice to be in-person, but given how many companies cancelled internships due to covid-19, very grateful to have the amazing experience! Monica and Zoe did a fantastic job putting the internship program together and we had weekly virtual meet ups with all of the interns.

Advice

Be yourself and never be afraid to make mistakes! They will happen. You learn the most from them. Every day is a learning experience and as you grow, you will find new opportunities and meet new people.

What I liked

My internship at Zebra was the best learning experience I’ve had at college. There is an emphasis on interns being assigned real work, and you definitely will not be running coffee and making copies. My manager was supportive of me branching out to experience more aspects of the business, which really helped me to decide my full-time career path.

What I wish was different

I wish there was another PMO intern in my department for me to work alongside so that we could bounce ideas and work collaboratively.

Advice

As with most things in life, your experience is what you make of it. My advice is to go above and beyond in your work to become fully immersed in your team. Internships end before you know it, so it’s essential that you hit the ground running and really build value for yourself and your team.

What I liked

Zebra is an incredible company to work for. They are growing very quickly, they are consistently ranked in Forbes Top Companies to Work For, and the culture and people that work there make the job so rewarding. I never felt like an intern at Zebra, they always made me feel like a full-time employee and the work I was doing had meaning. I got to go on business trips, meet tons of people at Zebra, present my big summer project to executive leadership, and they even offered me to continue my internship into the school year. I can't say enough good things about Zebra and the incredible opportunity they gave me. I'd highly recommend them to anyone!

What I wish was different

I honestly can't think of anything I wish had been different. If anything, I was the first nursing student to ever work for the company so at first they had to figure out what kind of work they wanted me to be doing and it took some time to get the ball rolling. However, that's to be expected in any new role and I think it says a lot about Zebra. Their model in recruiting talent focuses on finding talented, hardworking individuals and then finding or building a role for them, instead of just finding someone to fill a role. I think it's one of the reasons they've been so successful.

Advice

Take every single opportunity you're offered and when you can create opportunities for yourself. This was something I challenged myself to do from the very beginning and I never regretted a single "yes". Sometimes I was asked to do things that scared me or intimidated me like leading a call or going on a business trip or presenting to executives, but I always said yes and it always worked out very well for me. Although it can be intimidating, remember that everyone knows you're an intern and nobody expects you to be perfect. Just do your very best and learn from every experience and every person you meet. I promise your hard work will pay off and others will notice the effort you're putting in.

What I liked

The team I worked with at Zebra really made the experience as great as it was. My mentor and manager were always willing to help me and give advice for all aspects of my life going forward, and overall creating a friendly environment. I also got to learn a lot of new skills and techniques relavent to my major going forward.

What I wish was different

I wish I had the opportunity to work hands out with more of what Zebra Technolgoies has to offer.

Advice

Go into your internship prepared to ask questions and be honest with what information you truly know. That's how your co-workers will know how to best improve your skills and make you you take something out of your experience. Nobody goes into the first day of the job being an expert.

Go to company social outings, they're a lot of fun and you get to network with a broad range of people.

Public Relations Intern

What I liked

I loved the variety that both the company and my boss offered. In terms of management, my boss gave me a full range of tasks that were representative of a full-time role. From smaller tasks, like updating spreadsheets and databases, to bigger tasks, like researching a topic and going on to present it to C-level executives and actually working on implementing a program, everything I did was important. As for the company, Zebra is involved in so many verticals like retail, sports, manufacturing, T&L and healthcare, so the work never gets repetitive or boring.

What I wish was different

I wouldn't change a thing!

Advice

I would advise students seeking employment to practice reverse interviewing. It's important to speak to your future manager or boss before you accept a position. Your management can really make or break your experience, as evident in my past when I was managed by someone who wasn't really fit to manage. I knew when interviewing for this position that I wanted to make sure my future boss was someone who I could learn from and someone who would provide me with the right balance of assignments and freedom.

What I liked

I loved the environment and the people I worked with were great. Worked on lots of great projects given to me by my manager.

What I wish was different

I wish I could do part time as in intern but due to budget issues they couldn't keep me.

Advice

Always be confident especially during interviews. Even if you get nervous for the first project you are assigned ASK questions. It can be overwhelming at first but then you get used to everything.

What I liked

Awesome people who were willing to answer questions. With their occasional help, I was able to create an application for Android mobile devices even though I had zero Android development experience before being hired. Also the pay was a nice addition to gaining all of the experience.

What I wish was different

Nothing. I wouldn't even change the parts I disliked about the job. I learned a lot and now have a better idea of where I want my career to focus.

Advice

Just go out there and do it. There are always a million different reasons why you shouldn't do something. This internship was out of state and I had to pay for a second apartment. Money was tight, but I made it work and Im so glad I did.
