William Blair

Equity Research Intern

July - August 2020 • Baltimore, MD

What I liked

The work environment was phenomenal. Everybody was genuinely encouraging and focused on helping me learn and grow as much as possible.

What I wish was different

It was a remote internship so I didn’t get the opportunity to go through the motions of being in an actual office workspace.

Advice

Don’t be fixated or concerned on your boss/supervisor’s opinion. Just do your work to the best of your abilities and seek out opportunities to help your learning. That’s most important.

Investment Banking Intern

June - August 2020 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

What I wish was different

Due to Covid-19, the internship program was shortened and was remote. I wish I had the opportunity to meet the other interns and future co-workers in person. Notwithstanding, the internship program was extremely well organized, interesting, and productive.

Private Wealth Management Intern

April 2018 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

I've absolutely loved immersing myself into a different career option - I am an Accounting Major and Fin Minor. I have previously done a FSO Assurance Internship at EY, in which I was offered a position that I have signed for post graduation (June 2019). So my experience at William Blair has just been to obtain some different experience in a new field - which turns out I have grown to love. I was lucky enough to placed on an amazing team within the Private Wealth Management department that have taken me under their wing and have taught me so much about the industry.

What I wish was different

Honestly, nothing directly comes to mind.

Advice

One of the biggest pieces of advice would be to have an open dialog with your employer/boss - as over the summer I was taking classes too and working full time and am now continuing the position three times a week and a full time senior student - it's so important to communicate and balance your work load, while still allowing time for yourself and, your social life! This can all be possible by having that conversation with your boss and setting the expectation early. Another piece of advice would be never be scared to ask for more exposure in your roll even as an intern! It's often when you are an intern that your boss or colleagues are more willing to spend time showing you the ropes in all sorts of areas, you just have to ask!
