Manufacturing Leadership Development Program Intern

May - August 2023 • Findlay, OH

What I liked

I liked the ability to work on multiple different projects at the same time. I felt like I was able to gain a good understanding of many different processes. I feel like I gained an understanding of the way manufacturing should be done because whirlpool is a great manufacturing company.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have gone out of my comfort zone more at the start. I mainly kept to myself at the beginning and just tried to work through my projects alone. I began to branch out and talk to many different people. Everyone here is really willing to help and I developed multiple different friendships during my time at whirlpool. I also wish I would have spent a little more time on my final report out. I should have worked on it throughout the summer rather than at the end. This just added to the stress of preparing.

Advice

Take advantage of the networking opportunities with this position. This is a great internship to get your foot in the door with a great company. We were invited to corporate two times and were able to connect with the interns in other fields. You also have meetings with some higher ups in the company, so if you take a job here make sure to take advantage of those opportunities.

Sales Development Intern (Electronic and Computer Hardware)

May - August 2018 • Benton Harbor, MI

What I liked

Housing included, great intern activities, opportunities to grow, learn and grow. It’s a beach town, an do they have summer hours so I spent a lot of time on the beach.

What I wish was different

More BYU students would’ve known about Whirlpool Corporation, especially the Real Whirled Sales Program

Advice

Put yourself out there, most places want to hire you to see if you are a good fit, and then they want you to test and see if they are a good fit. Don’t work for anyone who doesn’t want to see success in you and doesn’t believe you can achieve it.

Manufacturing Engineer Intern

May - August 2019 • Greenville, OH

What I liked

Whirlpool Corporation invests a lot in their employees and company culture. This is especially true of their leadership development programs. They want you to succeed not only as an engineer, but as a member of a family, a company, and a community. I had many opportunities to learn, network, and lead others at work, as well as opportunities to serve the communities I lived in, such as participating in Habitat for Humanity with other interns. The main project I was involved in at the KitchenAid manufacturing facility was catered to my experience level and interest, making it easier for me to be engaged and happy at work. Whirlpool is an awesome company for which to work!

What I wish was different

Working for a corporation has cons among all the pros. One of the main cons of being in such a large company is that it's easy to be overlooked in the system or not get timely information when you need it. Whirlpool does its best to combat this as an organization, but there is still a lot of slow communication and some potential to get lost in the cracks if you don't learn how to communicate well.

Advice

Learn the company thoroughly. This includes the abbreviations, the company mission and values, the name of the CEO, the proper modes of communication, and any other relevant information. Showing that you understand how the company works makes you stand out as an employee because your focus is broader than just your project and your role.

Human Resources Intern

May - September 2021 • Benton Harbor, MI

What I liked

The role was a part-time externship in which I had the opportunity to learn more about Whirlpool and their functions. Having accepted a full-time return offer this summer, I feel prepared to enter Whirlpool feeling confident about their culture and business functions as a whole.

What I wish was different

I wish there was more opportunity to explore HR work explicitly. The externship was not only geared towards HR externs, but finance, engineering, and marketing as well. It sometimes felt like the work was all over the place.

Advice

Take advantage of your mentor. They're there to help and guide you. Although we were only required to meet once a month, my mentor and I met weekly and discussed not only Whirlpool and HR topics, but also general business and life skills.

Finance Development Program Intern

May - August 2021 • Benton Harbor, MI

What I liked

I really enjoyed the exposure and challenge the program offered. Coming into the internship I was very nervous and did not know what to expect. I really enjoyed the help I was able to receive from GVSU Alum and other people who have been in the program. It was a very collaborative work environment and everyone was looking to help.

What I wish was different

I wish it could have been in-person. It was a virtual internship, which made it difficult at first. But after a few weeks I was able to adjust and excel.

Advice

I would tell people not to be scared to ask question and to make sure to network. The most important thing is that they know your interest in the program as well as they want to know you are trying your hardest to excel on your project.

Human Resources Intern

What I liked

Whirlpool gives interns very impactful projects and the support needed to be successful.

What I wish was different

Obtaining access to certain programs took a while sometimes, which is difficult when trying to complete objectives in a short 12 weeks. I wish interns were either pre-authorized for access to the programs they need, or their requests were expedited.

Communications Intern

June 2018 - March 2019 • Benton Harbor, MI

What I liked

I liked the experience of working within a corporate environment and learning from co-workers there. The experience helped illuminate the direction in business I will pursue as well as the environment I would prefer.

What I wish was different

I wish I had the opportunity to present information to a group of employees within my field as that is a skill that I wanted to work on, but due to a couple of time conflicts I never got the chance until the end of my time there.

Advice

The corporate life is not for everyone. I know at first I was starstruck and felt like it was everything I thought it would be. However, as I started to get a greater sense of the month after month lifestyle of colleagues I realized that this environment has a huge impact on overall health. The office is not an ideal space for a person and it showed as a lot of the workers I met were stressed and seeking ways to cope with many problems that had surfaced since working at a desk for a few years. This also began to take a toll on me and became part of the reason I decided to leave and explore more varieties of work that would help build my skill set and get my mind and self back to a healthy state.
