What I liked

Through the UHM internship I gained a lot of amazing experience. I was able to learn more about myself and what areas I would like to work in. As an intern you are treated like a full-time partner and able to sit in on meetings and given meaningful work. The events the recruiters plan are fun and allow you to connect with other interns! Everyone at UHM is so kind and supportive!

Advice

Be open to learning more about different areas and talking to new people! Everyone is super nice and supportive in helping you throughout the internship.

What I liked

The people you work with will always treat you with respect and they treat interns like full time partners. Everything is over communicated so that everyone is on the same page. There was at least one fun event with the other interns every week. You are able to shadow the other departments and learn more about their day to day.

Advice

Be yourself and be ready to learn!

Technical Writing Intern

May 2022 • Strongsville, OH

What I liked

I LOVED this internship program! You will gain so much experience in terms of working in a corporate environment, working within and expanding your skillset, working in a team, and more! The Recruiting team does a great job of having the interns across all departments get together throughout the summer, whether it be a summer long group project or food trucks in the parking lot. Also - lots of free UHM gear :) You also don't have to know ANYTHING about the mortgage industry coming in, because they teach you everything you need to know on site!

What I liked

My favorite part of interning at Union Home Mortgage was the kindness of everyone around me. From my fellow interns, to full-time partners, to senior leaders, I knew I was surrounded by people who meant well.

What I wish was different

I wish they didn't feed us as much free food as they did. I'm now refusing to step on a scale.

Advice

Be open to talking to people about which path would be best for you in the company. UHM is really good about making sure you're in the right role - so speak up!

Compliace intern

May - August 2021 • Strongsville, OH

What I liked

I liked how I got to learn a lot while on the job about the company and different departments, as well as the mortgage industry which was new to me.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been tasked with completing more meaningful work from my supervisor, rather than the same repetitive testings and procedures completed every month. I hoped my manager would come to me with more challenging and impactful projects.

Advice

I would say to go for an opportunity that comes your way, even if it is outside of your comfort zone or does not necessarily align with your career path. It cans till be a very insightful experience, providing you with a lot of information you may have never learned otherwise.

Training Intern

May 2021 • Strongsville, OH

What I liked

Union Home Mortgage's L.E.A.D. Program is exceptional. I started in the Training department May 2021 and am now currently interning with the department again this fall. My internship experience has exceeded my expectations! The work as an intern is valuable to the organization, as well as fun. I was graciously able to intern in office this summer and can attest to the world-class culture of UHM. UHM does not have employees, but Partners, to show how integral each and every member of this organization is to its success and growth, which is not found at a lot of other organizations. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time working at UHM and can't wait to continue through the fall!

What I wish was different

Nothing! Whether you stick with UHM or move on in your career, this internship program prepares you well for whatever career goals you may have.

Advice

Take advantage of this program! UHM is blessed to take on interns and give them a phenomenal experience. Attend seminars, attend intern programs, attend everything UHM offers to interns because without this program, I would not have gained professional experience or networking opportunities as significant as I have with UHM.

IT Third Party Applications Analyst

May 2021 • Strongsville, OH

What I liked

Where do I even start? I think the best thing I can talk about it the people. Everyone who I have talked to has been extremely nice and helpful no matter what. And here, just because you're an intern doesn't mean you're looked down upon. I seriously feel like I am a full-time partner but I'm still an intern. Every idea I bring up is at least looked into and not just turned down because I'm an intern. Plus all of the events the recruiters put on for us is great, it really makes it fun. I really genuinely enjoy coming to work every single day. I enjoy everyone who I work with and it is such a positive environment, it's so different from any other company that I worked with previously, it's really cool to see how positive everyone is at work!

What I wish was different

I wish everyone was in person, but that's no fault of the company obviously, but it would've been cool to see everyone in person

Advice

Try your best to be involved. Bring up new ideas you may have about your work or the processes around it, be outgoing and meet new people. No one is going to turn you down for bringing up new ideas or anything like that. And try to be involved in the intern events if you are an intern, if you're actually involved they're a lot of fun and it makes the experience even better!

IT Help Desk Intern

May - August 2021 • Strongsville, OH

What I liked

I actually made an impact when working here. I was able to do meaningful work and get a true experience .All the intern events were really fun to attend. Everybody is extremely nice and understanding. Everybody sticks to the core values to make this a comfortable and safe work place. I am beyond excited to continue my career here.

What I wish was different

I wish more of the virtual interns came in the office. It was hard to bond with them and get to know everybody who was virtual.

Advice

I highly recommend experiencing this internship in the office. While UHM does a fantastic job of including the remote interns the experience definitely varies. You get to know the culture way better and being in person for the events was definitely worth it.

Marketing Intern

May - August 2021 • Strongsville, OH

What I liked

Interning at Union Home Mortgage was such an amazing experience. They treat their interns like they are full-time employees and truly do give you a world-class experience. Every task I was given was always utilized to help the company grow, I was never given tasks that didn't matter. In the few months of being an intern, I have learned SO MUCH. UHM strives to teach their interns not only everything about the mortgage business, but also gives you the tools to expand your skill set that will make a difference in your future career.

What I wish was different

There is nothing that I wish would have been different. The recruiting team did such an amazing job at planning events for interns and guiding them throughout the program. My recruiter, Isabella, always checked in on me to see how I was doing and always made sure I was comfortable within my role at the company.

Advice

My advice for future UHM interns is to enjoy every moment of the program because it goes by so quickly. Sit in on as many meetings as you can, never be afraid to ask questions, learn as much as you can, and utilize every opportunity you're given!

IT Help Desk Intern

May 2020 • Strongsville, OH

What I liked

The internship was extremely professional and welcoming, despite being a completely virtual environment. All departments were very welcoming to each and every intern. This experience had increased my knowledge on the mortgage industry and what the process is for the start of a loan to follow towards completion. The Help Desk allowed me to reach out to partners via multiple communication channels and challenged me with problem solving for mortgage programs. All managers were extremely helpful in answering questions on a day to day basis and gave me external resources to continue my learning within IT and the mortgage business. I shadowed Infrastructure, Innovation and Security and was able to grasp better how each department affects the whole of the company. The planned intern events were always very interactive and allowed me to get more connected with all interns. The recruiting team were always willing to help and brought a positive environment to the internship. I will be continuing throughout the school year with the Help Desk and have extremely enjoyed my time here so far.

What I wish was different

Nothing. The experience was world class despite being virtual

Advice

Always ask questions and show the partners around you the passion you have for the position you are in. Expand your knowledge any chance you get by asking how to learn about a certain program/software/etc.

Summer 2020 Compliance Intern

May - August 2020 • Strongsville, OH

What I liked

The company culture at Union Home Mortgage is unmatched. Interns are tasked with meaningful projects and have the opportunity to interact with Partners at all levels of the company. UHM truly values the interns and the Campus Recruiters go out of their way to make the experience rewarding and fun. Interns are encouraged to shadow different departments, learn about all areas of the business, and find what they are truly passionate about. Summer 2020 was entirely virtual due to COVID-19, but the company sent work-from-home equipment to all 85 interns' homes (two monitors, a laptop, wireless mouse, wireless keyboard, and headset). The internship exceeded all of my expectations!

What I wish was different

Advice

Ask questions and take advantage of the countless opportunities for growth and development!

Servicing Intern

May - August 2020 • Strongsville, OH

What I liked

The L.E.A.D. internship program at Union Home Mortgage is well developed and allows to students to explore and understand all aspects of a business. I was able to work alongside the servicing oversight team and assist them with real work. The overall program also allowed me to explore different departments of UHM. Interns are encouraged to shadow other departments to help find what they are passionate about. In addition to this, the company culture is very transparent and the senior management held multiple events where interns could ask questions to learn from their experience.

What I wish was different

I would have liked to be in the office with my team but due to COVID-19 the program was virtual. However, the campus recruiting team was still able to make this experience world-class.

Advice

Take full advantage of the meetings with senior management. They are very welcoming to questions and are willing to invest time and effort into the development of the interns.

Post-Closing Intern

April 2020 • Strongsville, OH

What I liked

The greatest thing about Union Home Mortgage is the culture. The partners of UHM want you to succeed no matter what and upper management shows that that they care about their employees and interns. For the internship program specifically they make it very inclusive and fun. Even from our remote setting this summer I felt like I got to interact with partners from my department and other interns as if we were together. Lots of engagement and opportunities to get to know other people and make connections. As for job responsibilities, I was in operations and the biggest key to success is being diligent in your work. Some good qualities that would help you fit in operations would be organization, communication skills and the ability to multitask. The internship program really helped me grow as a young professional and I learned a whole lot about the mortgage industry. I could go on and on about my great experience with UHM, but you should apply and find out for yourself! If you show you care and your working toward a common goal for the betterment of the company you'll fit in well. I received offers to come back in the fall and next May after I graduate!

What I wish was different

Absolutely nothing, but COVID not happening so I could've got to go into the office sooner.

Advice

Listed it all in my first paragraph!

IT Data Analytics

May - August 2020 • Strongsville, OH

What I liked

To begin with, I really enjoyed working as a member of a team at UHM. I was one of 3 interns in the department and along with the full time partners I feel as though we all got along very well and became great friends which really made the internship for me. Although I'm sure this isn't exclusive to my department as everyone I met was so friendly and really enjoyed working for the company. Within my department I was really pleasantly surprised to be given so many actual analytics projects that contributed real value to the company as well as helped the full time partners in their long term projects. As a sophomore in this field it can be difficult to not only find an internship but especially a good one, and I'm so thankful I ended up at UHM. Additionally, I found that I learned quite a bit about both the mortgage industry and how to be a successful analyst. In fact, at the start of the program our department supervisor gave us all sufficient time to become proficient in SAS (as we then used the software throughout the summer) which is a skill I'm certain I will use in many future internships and full time roles.

What I wish was different

The internship was conducted completely virtually, so I wish I had made more of an effort to meet other interns and shadow more departments.

Advice

Sometimes there will be lulls between projects, so make an effort to reach out to senior members of your department and see if there is anything they need help with. So many learning opportunities for me came out of simply being introduced to the other projects that were being worked on in the department and discovering the different ways other partners went about problem solving. As well, I gained more knowledge about different sides of the mortgage industry and the data within it. If you have any questions about UHM or the IT Data Analytics team feel free to reach out to me!
