Union Home Mortgage

Summer 2020 Compliance Intern

May - August 2020 • Strongsville, OH

What I liked

The company culture at Union Home Mortgage is unmatched. Interns are tasked with meaningful projects and have the opportunity to interact with Partners at all levels of the company. UHM truly values the interns and the Campus Recruiters go out of their way to make the experience rewarding and fun. Interns are encouraged to shadow different departments, learn about all areas of the business, and find what they are truly passionate about. Summer 2020 was entirely virtual due to COVID-19, but the company sent work-from-home equipment to all 85 interns' homes (two monitors, a laptop, wireless mouse, wireless keyboard, and headset). The internship exceeded all of my expectations!

The work was very meaningful and fully applied to actual operations of the company. There were many opportunities for professional development and your presence at the company is felt immediately. You have unique opportunities to shadow board members from other departments and engage in executive meetings. Aside from this, there are many interactive events outside of work that involve all of the other interns. One of the best aspects of UHM is the company culture, which is very close-knit and lively.

Human Resources Intern

May - August 2019 • Strongsville, OH

What I liked

I absolutely loved my experience with Union Home Mortgage and their L.E.A.D. Internship program. We were able to get hands-on, applicable experience throughout the summer all while having fun through events, such as food trucks, ice cream trucks, scavenger hunts, bowling, and Lunch & Learns with each department. One of the biggest things the UHM prides itself on is not shielding the interns from the real-life processes, we are here to learn what the industry and positions are like and they allow that to happen.

What I wish was different

Advice

If you're curious about the mortgage industry or you want to get experience in an atmosphere of transparency and knowledge, you should definitely consider the L.E.A.D Internship Program. IF you're unsure about what exactly you are interested in, this internship gives you flexibility across departments through shadowing opportunities and weekly department-specific seminars.

What I liked

The internship exceeded all of my expectations! The work that the departments have you do is actually really valuable to the company so you always feel like you are contributing to their success. The entire IT department as well as others were so welcoming to the interns and loved having us around. There are a bunch of shadowing opportunities throughout the company. Along with the work there are a bunch of events that the Campus Recruiters put together for the interns, including scavenger hunts, escape rooms, lunch and learns and more! You never get bored and are always fed!

What I wish was different

Honestly, nothing. If you were bored there was always room to help out different departments!

Advice

Take advantage of the Lunch and Learns and Corporate actives! It makes for a better experience and even better networking opportunities!

Computer Help Desk Specialist

May - August 2019 • Strongsville, OH

What I liked

I enjoyed all of the people I worked with. Everyone was very helpful when I asked questions. I also liked that there was constant communication between the IT teams with weekly meetings. This brought everyone in on the same page on what is being worked on. We also had meetings inside each team to talk about issues from the week.

What I wish was different

One thing I would have liked is a project for the IT interns to collectively work on. This would have allowed collaboration between the different teams. I also would have liked to explore the other teams of IT.

Advice

Ask as many questions as possible and take notes on what the answer is because the problem will come up again.

IT Help Desk Intern

May 2020 • Strongsville, OH

What I liked

The internship was extremely professional and welcoming, despite being a completely virtual environment. All departments were very welcoming to each and every intern. This experience had increased my knowledge on the mortgage industry and what the process is for the start of a loan to follow towards completion. The Help Desk allowed me to reach out to partners via multiple communication channels and challenged me with problem solving for mortgage programs. All managers were extremely helpful in answering questions on a day to day basis and gave me external resources to continue my learning within IT and the mortgage business. I shadowed Infrastructure, Innovation and Security and was able to grasp better how each department affects the whole of the company. The planned intern events were always very interactive and allowed me to get more connected with all interns. The recruiting team were always willing to help and brought a positive environment to the internship. I will be continuing throughout the school year with the Help Desk and have extremely enjoyed my time here so far.

What I wish was different

Nothing. The experience was world class despite being virtual

Advice

Always ask questions and show the partners around you the passion you have for the position you are in. Expand your knowledge any chance you get by asking how to learn about a certain program/software/etc.

IT Data Analytics

May - August 2020 • Strongsville, OH

What I liked

To begin with, I really enjoyed working as a member of a team at UHM. I was one of 3 interns in the department and along with the full time partners I feel as though we all got along very well and became great friends which really made the internship for me. Although I'm sure this isn't exclusive to my department as everyone I met was so friendly and really enjoyed working for the company. Within my department I was really pleasantly surprised to be given so many actual analytics projects that contributed real value to the company as well as helped the full time partners in their long term projects. As a sophomore in this field it can be difficult to not only find an internship but especially a good one, and I'm so thankful I ended up at UHM. Additionally, I found that I learned quite a bit about both the mortgage industry and how to be a successful analyst. In fact, at the start of the program our department supervisor gave us all sufficient time to become proficient in SAS (as we then used the software throughout the summer) which is a skill I'm certain I will use in many future internships and full time roles.

What I wish was different

The internship was conducted completely virtually, so I wish I had made more of an effort to meet other interns and shadow more departments.

Advice

Sometimes there will be lulls between projects, so make an effort to reach out to senior members of your department and see if there is anything they need help with. So many learning opportunities for me came out of simply being introduced to the other projects that were being worked on in the department and discovering the different ways other partners went about problem solving. As well, I gained more knowledge about different sides of the mortgage industry and the data within it. If you have any questions about UHM or the IT Data Analytics team feel free to reach out to me!

Post-Closing Intern

April 2020 • Strongsville, OH

What I liked

The greatest thing about Union Home Mortgage is the culture. The partners of UHM want you to succeed no matter what and upper management shows that that they care about their employees and interns. For the internship program specifically they make it very inclusive and fun. Even from our remote setting this summer I felt like I got to interact with partners from my department and other interns as if we were together. Lots of engagement and opportunities to get to know other people and make connections. As for job responsibilities, I was in operations and the biggest key to success is being diligent in your work. Some good qualities that would help you fit in operations would be organization, communication skills and the ability to multitask. The internship program really helped me grow as a young professional and I learned a whole lot about the mortgage industry. I could go on and on about my great experience with UHM, but you should apply and find out for yourself! If you show you care and your working toward a common goal for the betterment of the company you'll fit in well. I received offers to come back in the fall and next May after I graduate!

What I wish was different

Absolutely nothing, but COVID not happening so I could've got to go into the office sooner.

Advice

Listed it all in my first paragraph!
