I enjoyed the hands on aspect working as a tooling engineer in a manufacturing setting. I worked with mechanics and listed to their ideas for improvement on the production line. I designed and implemented tools to improve the safety and efficiency of the production line for the mechanics in the Interior Responsibilities Center. I greatly enjoyed working with the mechanics to improve their work process.
What I wish was different
I wish I had received a more formal training in CATIA V5, which is the CAD software used to design the tools and products. I found it difficult to learn the shortcuts and hidden tools within the program to efficiently design new tools.
Advice
Be open to applying advice from co-workers, whether its floor mechanics, engineers or management.

Coworkers / management was very friendly and happy to do informational interviews, walk thru a process with you, etc

Early start (6-7am).
Advice
Ask lots of questions at the beginning and really network with your manager and team to find connections across the company. Everyone knows someone in the team / group you’re really curious about ...but you have to ask!

What I liked
I was given a mentor on my first week which was very helpful. Going into this internship, I didn't know much about loads and dynamics engineering, but meeting with my mentor a couple times a week really helped me learn more about my tasks and the overall scope of our work.
What I wish was different
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the internship was moved to a virtual environment. Obviously, I would have liked to be in the office instead of working from home.
Advice
One piece of advice would be to network as much as possible and meet everyone you can during the internship. I got to talk to all sorts of people, including former astronauts and the chief engineer for my project, which hopefully will serve me well in my future career goals.

What I liked
I really enjoyed the fact that Boeing treated their interns as they would any other employees. As an intern, we were given meaningful work that had an impact on the bottom line. Personally, I had the opportunity as a financial analyst to work on various estimates on the 777X program.
What I wish was different
I wish I had prior experience/knowledge regarding the aerospace industry before my internship. There's a steep learning curve with all the vocabulary and abbreviations they expect you to know going into your internship.
Advice
Have an open mind going into an internship, ask lots of meaningful questions, and challenge yourself!

The people I got to work with were fantastic. The projects were meaningful, interesting, and challenging. I got the chance to meet with people from all over the company. There were also lots of great intern events.
What I wish was different
Although the program is inclusive of all students. It's schedule is oriented towards semester school schedules which left most of august absent of any intern events.
Advice
Go in with an open mind and when you get there be an advocate for yourself. Take ownership on whatever you can and never waste your time.

What I liked
The pay was great, and the people I worked with were very good. I had flexibility in what I wanted to work on, and had the opportunity to try different things. Overall, it was a favorable experience over any other place I've worked.
What I wish was different
The workload of the office I was originally assigned to wasn't sufficient to keep me busy when I showed up, and it wasn't the type of work I'd like to spend part of my career doing. I had to really network to find other jobs and find my own place with another team. I wish it would have been easier for me to jump into something, rather than spending half the summer trying to find my own way.
Advice
Get to know the people you work with, and use the opportunity to really figure out what you like and don't like. This will enable you to get a full-time position you know you'll be happy with. Working with a big company can be frustrating at times, but there are many benefits to offset it.

Loved the experience working with industry experts. There was lots of flexibility to explore areas of interest and my manager was really supportive in helping me work on meaningful projects. Really great experience!

More communication about the post-internship process would have been helpful. I was not sure for a while if I would be receiving a return offer or not. Several factors contributed to this - all of which were outside my manager's control.

Talk to as many people who work for the company as possible. I had roughly fifty reoccurring one-on-ones with people who ranged from managers to VPs. There was another intern who I had one-on-ones with that had over one-hundred biweekly tag-ups with Boeing employees. Needless to say, she was offered an opportunity to participate in one of Boeing's rotational programs and I fell short.
