HSE Intern

June - August 2020 • Greensboro, NC

What I liked

I truly loved the wonderful culture at Syngenta. Every single person I had the opportunity to work with during my internship was incredibly enthusiastic, curious, and driven. Further, at Syngenta, individuals recognize the importance of their work and its impact throughout the agricultural world. Therefore, it is not only the mindset of those that work at Syngenta that make the company's culture great, but their overarching mission as well. It was amazing to be a part of such a great community.

What I wish was different

Unfortunately, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, I was unable to visit the site and interact directly with those on the HSE team. I would have loved to meet those I worked with first-hand and see the site in person. However, I am fortunate that Syngenta still had me join their company for a summer despite the challenges the pandemic imposed.

Advice

Be curious! Over the course of my internship, I had the opportunity to work and learn from individuals throughout the company and around the globe. During my conversations with these individuals, I was able to learn so much more about Syngenta as a whole, their individual work, and gain insights for propelling my future career. Thus, I highly recommend asking as many questions as possible and reaching out to individuals throughout the company to truly make the most of your time at Syngenta.

Lab Technician

July - September 2020 • Nampa, ID

What I liked

I liked how everyone had a positive attitude, no one really complained about their job.

What I wish was different

I wish the culture among the leadership could've been more helpful and understanding, I felt very pressured as a new employee and wish there would've been more of culture of cultivating.

Advice

I would say that you should be prepared to do a lot of physical labor, exercise regularly so you don't throw out your back and come with an attitude of learning so you can excel quickly.

Maintenance Engineering Co-op

May 2019 • St. Gabriel, LA

What I liked

This job is very well rounded. I received tasks which applied to not only maintenance engineering, but project engineering, design engineering, and data analysis as well. I work closely with very knowledgeable engineers who are always willing to help with problems and encourage learning.

What I wish was different

A lot of work is taken over from previous CO-OPs. It can be strenuous jumping into a project mid-way through completion and trying to catch yourself up on what is going on in order to see it through.

Advice

The CO-OP is long and will push graduation. However, the time spent on this job is well worth a delayed graduation date. There is no way a normal 4 month internship would be enough time to get the most out of an internship experience. Even after almost a year I still learn new things daily and am able to improve myself as a prospective engineer. My time here has helped me gain perspective on how school work applies to the job, and makes me excited to finish school and begin working in this field.

What I wish was different

Being able to meet with producers and discuss the different types of seed or crop protection they’re looking for to implement within their business.
