What I liked

The independence they provide in doing the work. You get exposure to a lot of senior leadership at different companies and deals that are worth $200m+. Your work is always different and there is always something to learn in the fields of M&A, capital raising, private equity, private credit and Canadian industries

What I wish was different

The hours were not the best, but I was prepared to face those hours. ~18 hour workdays + weekends most times

Advice

Take a lot of notes, most things will go over your head at first. Ask a lot of questions and make sure to remember the answers, don't ask something twice.

I loved my team and the work environment. I learned a lot because I had great mentors.

What I wish was different

Hours were too long and there were many days when I had nothing to do.

Advice

Be proactive and ask for more work if you have nothing to do. Don't be afraid to ask question and set up coffee chats to network with people on different teams.

What I liked

I loved the location. New York is such a vibrant and diverse city. There is always something to do at any time of the day. I could see New York Harbor and the Statue of Liberty out of my office window everyday.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have known that I would be working alone. I thought I would be working on a team with fellow interns. Not the case.

Advice

The internship program did not offer housing. Make sure you figure out your housing situation immediately after accepting the internship.

What I liked

I loved the company culture. It was a smaller office (but growing!), which made it easy to network with people in other departments and get to know how everything operates. Many higher-ups had an open-door policy and I never felt inhibited from reaching out and speaking to the company's leaders.

What I wish was different

I wish the selection of my team had been more transparent. I was not placed onto my preferred team and was a little disheartened to later hear that my preferred department had actually asked for interns but was denied the budget. I also hope that management would have arranged more events for interns, most events I attended were organized by my department and were not intern-specific.

Advice

Take the opportunity to network within the firm and learn what makes for a successful career. Scotiabank is hiring many people from a wide range of professional backgrounds and it is crucial to get a comprehensive insight into peoples' successes.

The most important aspect that I enjoy from working at Scotiabank is that I was able to learn a lot of the real world business in a financial institute and be part of this friendly yet professional environment.
