Global Markets Intern

June - August 2022 • New York City, NY

What I liked

The culture of the bank is awesome, outstanding in the industry. People are always willing to help and teach you things. The Internship program assigns to a specific team but you're free to explore the bank. A lot of internationals in the senior staff, which makes the environment very friendly for foreigners.

What I wish was different

Outside of some early IT issues, the internship went pretty smoothly. I do believe the rotation process could be more “automatized”. It is important to put interns out there and let them connect as much as possible, but it’s hard to understand another business area without spending some time there.

Advice

Don't wait for people to assign stuff to do. Be proactive and find out ways to help. Don't hesitate to reach out and ask to visit other areas if you are interested.

Cost Management and Allocations Intern

July - August 2020 • Boston, MA

What I liked

This internship was my first experience as part of the corporate world. It was a completely rewarding internship where I established valuable relationships with fellow colleagues. I also learned how to allocate costs to different entities of the firm, which was not easy given the millions of data, but it kept me curious the decluter them!

What I wish was different

I believe a lot of students who worked this year will understand me here. I truly wish I could physically go to the office instead of remotely. I met so many people who I wish I could talk in real life and share each other's experiences. Even though, my great team made sure I get the chance to explore this internship at its fullest!

Advice

I would say asking questions all the time is something I would keep on telling everyone who wishes to experience this job. People at Santander are very open and friendly to help any time and you can get a lot of support from everyone, either teammate or manager, or even the CFO, as it was in my case.

Universal Banker

July - September 2018 • Jersey City, NJ

What I liked

One of my favorite and most challenging tasks was learning to analyze banking activities of clients and translating them into offers for different products. This had to be accompanied with a conversational experience with the clients and building a trustful relationship through which the client was willing to share intricate financial information. Without the financial information, there was not much that I could help the clients with. But the journey to acquire financial information was led with a very open and friendly conversation, in which, if successfully executed, clients would talk to you as if you have had a friendly relationship with them your entire life!

What I wish was different

Nothing about my work experience made me dislike my time as a Universal Banker. I only wish I was able to work longer!

Advice

Your first goal should be to thoroughly understand your role and the products that you must be identifying for interested customers. When that's done, you only have to approach each client with a genuine conversation. If your friendliness is not genuine, or you do not seem interested in learning more about the customer, the customer will never feel that you are trying to help them and will be hesitant to build a trusting relationship with you.
