IT Support Specialist Intern

September 2021 - March 2022 • Houston, TX

What I liked

Working as an IT Support Specialist Intern at Salesforce has been an enriching and highly educational experience, providing me with valuable insights into the world of tech support and the corporate culture at one of the industry's leading companies. Here are the aspects I particularly enjoyed during my internship: 1. **Exposure to Cutting-Edge Technology:** Salesforce is renowned for its innovative solutions, and as an intern, I had the privilege of working with some of the latest technologies and tools in the IT support field. This exposure allowed me to expand my technical skill set significantly. 2. **Professional Development:** The company places a strong emphasis on professional growth and development. I appreciated the numerous opportunities to attend workshops, training sessions, and webinars, which not only enhanced my technical knowledge but also helped me develop crucial soft skills, such as communication and problem-solving. 3. **Supportive Team:** The IT support team at Salesforce is exceptionally supportive and collaborative. My colleagues were always willing to share their expertise, answer questions, and provide guidance. The sense of teamwork and camaraderie made tackling challenging issues enjoyable. 4. **Diverse and Inclusive Environment:** Salesforce's commitment to diversity and inclusion is evident in its workplace culture. I found it inspiring to be part of a team that values differences and fosters an inclusive environment where everyone's voice is heard and respected. 5. **Mentorship Opportunities:** Throughout my internship, I had the privilege of working closely with experienced professionals who served as mentors. Their guidance and mentorship were invaluable, helping me gain a deeper understanding of the IT field and providing insights into potential career paths. 6. **Hands-On Experience:** I appreciated that my role allowed me to take on real responsibilities and contribute to the team's success. Whether it was resolving user issues, setting up new hardware, or participating in IT projects, I felt that my contributions were genuinely meaningful. 7. **Corporate Social Responsibility:** Salesforce's commitment to giving back to the community was inspiring. Being part of a company that actively engages in philanthropy and encourages employees to volunteer for various causes gave me a sense of purpose beyond my day-to-day tasks. 8. **Professional Networking:** My internship at Salesforce provided ample opportunities to connect with professionals from diverse backgrounds, both within and outside the company. Networking events and conferences allowed me to build relationships that will likely prove beneficial throughout my career. 9. **Innovation Culture:** Salesforce encourages its employees to think innovatively and contribute to the company's mission of making the world a better place. This atmosphere of innovation was inspiring and encouraged creative problem-solving. 10. **Feedback and Growth:** Salesforce places a strong emphasis on feedback and continuous improvement. Regular performance evaluations and constructive feedback sessions helped me identify areas for growth and development, enabling me to continually progress in my role. In conclusion, my internship as an IT Support Specialist at Salesforce was a valuable learning experience that exposed me to a dynamic and inclusive corporate culture while allowing me to contribute meaningfully to the IT support team's objectives. The knowledge, skills, and relationships I gained during this internship will undoubtedly shape my future career in IT support and beyond.

What I wish was different

During my time as an IT Support Specialist Intern at Salesforce, I had an overall positive experience, but there are a few areas where I believe improvements could have been made: 1. **Structured Onboarding:** While I received excellent support from my colleagues and mentors, a more structured onboarding process could have been beneficial. A well-defined orientation program, including documentation and training materials, could help new interns acclimate to the company more efficiently. 2. **Clarity in Project Assignments:** There were instances where project assignments lacked clear objectives or scope. Providing interns with more explicit project guidelines and goals would have helped ensure that our contributions align with departmental objectives. 3. **Diversity in Task Assignment:** Although I gained valuable experience in my role, a more diverse range of tasks and responsibilities could have been assigned to interns. This would have allowed us to explore different aspects of IT support and gain a more comprehensive skill set. 4. **Regular Feedback Sessions:** While there were feedback sessions, a more regular and structured feedback schedule could enhance the learning experience for interns. Scheduled check-ins could ensure that interns receive ongoing guidance and support. 5. **Increased Exposure to Cross-Functional Teams:** Expanding opportunities for interns to collaborate with teams beyond IT support could provide a broader perspective on Salesforce's operations and business processes. 6. **Flexibility in Scheduling:** Offering more flexible work arrangements or accommodating varying schedules for interns could help balance work commitments with personal or academic responsibilities.

Advice

One valuable piece of advice I would share about my experience as an IT Support Specialist Intern at Salesforce is the importance of proactive communication. In a fast-paced and dynamic environment like Salesforce, it's crucial to be proactive in seeking help, sharing insights, and reporting issues promptly. This proactive approach not only helps you learn faster but also fosters a collaborative and supportive atmosphere within the team. It demonstrates your commitment to providing excellent support and ensures that any potential problems are addressed before they escalate. So, my advice would be to embrace proactive communication – ask questions, offer solutions, and keep the lines of communication open with your colleagues and mentors. It not only enhances your learning experience but also contributes to the overall success of the IT support team and the company as a whole.

Technical Writer Intern

May - August 2020 • San Francisco, CA

What I liked

Everything. The people at Salesforce has a way for everyone to feel supported, included, and celebrated. Even as a summer intern, I felt like everyone valued what I had to say, I worked on a meaningful project, and I create relationships with motivated, kind-hearted people. The company culture is unreal and it shapes the way they work by creating tech that helps others.

What I wish was different

The only thing I wish had been different is actually being on-site in San Francisco. There were many times I wished I was in the office, meeting other employees & interns, and exploring the city. With that being said, they did an excellent job at creating an immersive, fun virtual internship experience!

Advice

Come into the workplace curious, no matter where you go. Keep an open mind and don't be afraid to ask questions. Any Salesforce employee I came across was happy to help me and answered all of my "dumb" questions without judgement.

Technical Writing Intern

June - September 2019 • San Francisco, CA

What I liked

The company culture is fantastic. There's a clear focus on community and giving back to your communities (inside and outside of the office). Interns have the opportunity to take VTO, which is short for Volunteer Time Off. There are also lots of events for interns — I had the chance to go to a couple of free baseball games at AT&T Park, attend the SF Symphony Gala Afterparty, and have dinner at a few nice restaurants. My team was also a great fit for me. I think that your recruiter and your manager do a great job of pairing you with a team that really fits you as a person (and as an employee).

What I wish was different

The company is unlike other tech companies in the Bay Area in that it doesn't have its own "campus" like Apple, Facebook, or Google. This has its ups (you're encouraged to leave work for lunch and explore the city) and downs (SF food is expensive!).

Advice

I was offered free corporate housing or a housing stipend. I wish that I had taken the free housing, as I would have been able to live with other interns. I think that doing so would have made my internship a more immersive experience, and I would have met more people doing so.

What I liked

Salesforce is awesome workplace where you get overall development. I worked in Einstein Team at Salesforce on numerous technologies like Scala , AutoML performance and regression testing platforms , Looker etc and I was really impressed to see that an intern gets the opportunity to contribute , discuss and even give out new ideas and implement them! The management is so positive and you are always surrounded by extra ordinary people. This will push you to perform great! The work life balance is really cool. There are numerous intern activities and opportunities. Snacks are awesome at Salesforce Tower!

What I wish was different

Nothing!

Software Engineering Intern

June - August 2019 • San Francisco, CA

What I liked

I like the company's values and mission. We do volunteer work and help the community. Also I like how my recruiter is helping me along the way on my 12 weeks interning with them. And also how they tailored the events such as going to Angel Island and watching baseball at Oracle Park and doing Scavenger hunt. In addition, I met and networked with other people that worked in Salesforce for many years and how they journey on where they are right now.

What I wish was different

I wish they given me a project that would be impactful and more sense of teamwork and team building project because I pretty much on my internship I did work on my own. Also I wish I have a different mentor and a more variety of projects to work with because my mentor wasn't really than helpful. He's more frustrated than helpful and less unapproachable. He works late and I work early so I think there's a huge gap of communicating with my mentor so I had to reach more to the other team to help me out on the project. Also my boss didn't see the value in me. I know the company's mission and values a lot and I embraced them entirely. And most of the interns didn't embraced that value and care more about the money that they receive.

Advice

Always know your value is worth and if people don't see that you better start giving more out to other people and show it that your better. If your team doesn't see your value then for sure some other teams will more of it than the one you currently have.
