Crop Scout Intern

What I liked

Good experience. Mostly, worked at my own pace. I received a company truck and worked outdoors. I also learned a lot about diseases and nutrient deficiencies of row crops.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have worked with farmers more and would have gained some sales experience.

Advice

Interns should try to learn some common nutrient deficiencies and common issues with row crops before they start.

Agronomy Intern

What I liked

I really liked the flexibility in work and how much I learned about scouting and the retail side of agriculture.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have had the job outside of COVID because we missed out on many of the intern training sessions and face to face meets with the growers.

Advice

Always do an internship, preferably something different for your three years of college to experience different things and find where you would fit best as a career.

Nutrien Ag Solutions Seasonal Field Technician

What I liked

I liked working with the plant breeder and agronomists. I learned a lot about maintaining experimental field plots and making crosses. My coworkers were knowledgeable and good guides on the job. It was hard work in the heat of the summer but it was a good experience.

What I wish was different

Nothing, it was a good summer job.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions and accept you don't know how to do everything and make up for it by a eagerness to learn.

Digital Operations Intern

What I liked

I was given a large variety of different tasks, which gave me insight to a lot of different fields within software engineering, DevOps, and IT. Additionally, I learned about a lot of different technologies associated with each field.

What I wish was different

I wish it was an in-person experience. I felt that I didn't connect with everyone as well as I could have even though I was able to make a lasting impression with my colleagues.

Advice

Come in with a good attitude and expect a learning curve. A lot of it comes down to industry rather than academics.

Process Engineering Co-Op

What I liked

The company culture is very relaxed, the people there are accustomed to the co-op experience. You have lots of avenues for assistance if you are willing to take them. The workload is pretty dependent on what you are comfortable with, they don't expect you to work on the same level as the employees. The projects you can get assigned are representative of what you might do in that field, and it can teach you the practicality of your academic classes. Most of the work doesn't stretch over long periods of days or week, so if you don't enjoy a certain piece it won't last that long. Everyone there is very nice, it can be a rewarding and influential experience if you put some effort into it.

What I wish was different

There can be some lulls in workload if you don't go around begging for something to do. The engineers try to be pretty hands off, letting you figure out problems on your own, which can be a positive or negative depending on the type of person you are.

Advice

Ask for help. Ask for advice. If you don't know a procedure to follow or a solution to a problem you've been stuck on, everyone is willing to help. They have no trouble leading you in the right direction and you will learn more through that then struggling on your own.

Engineering Co-op

What I liked

I honestly liked pretty much all of it. For all the work that I did, all of it was very interesting and very engaging. When work was slow, I could always ask for more and they would try to find some for me. I also liked that I got to engage with many different people, such as the plant operators, Nutrien engineers, outside design firm engineers, contractors, and more. I felt like I had built professional relationships with many in and out of company co-workers. I also liked the casual work environment and flexibility, never feeling too stressed or pressured at any time. You will also be treated as a real engineer and given projects and work very similar or the same as your full-time co-workers. I felt like a valued team member throughout my two work terms. I never felt I was ‘the intern’ at any time. Lastly, I really enjoyed how much people wanted to help us, include us in their projects and work, and let us do projects that we were interested in. Overall, it was a great experience, I learned a lot, and I was treated well.

What I wish was different

What I wish could have been different was mostly out of their control. A big one is that housing options are limited and the location itself. There is not much to do in Lima, but it is a quick hour drive from Dayton, so going back for weekends is easy. During my summer term, there was even less to do as everyone at Dayton had gone home, so I had to find more things to do in my free time in Lima. There were also a few hiccups with some company services and access in the first week, but once those were cleared up, I no problems throughout my two terms.

Advice

One piece of advice, like others have shared, is to be comfortable to ask for work to do. Like I said above, people will always be willing to give you things to do or help you find something, you will just have to ask. Doing this, I was the go-to person to get help with various projects and trusted with more duties. For times when work was slow, I had some very long-term and low-priority projects in the background that I would work on while waiting. You should also be comfortable and willing to try new things. By doing that, I learned many new skills and completed many enjoyable and challenging projects. I would not have done them if I had not been deciding to try new things and going out of my comfort zone. Lastly, you should try to accept all work given to you by properly prioritizing the more time sensitive ones and after those are done then doing the rest.

I loved all the people I worked with. They were all so willing to help and teach me everything I needed to know. I am so happy that I was able to work with them the past two summers.

What I wish was different

Honestly, I just loved my whole experience so much that I would not trade anything about it.

Advice

The connections you make with people from your hometown and your professors here really can make it or break it for you later on in life. I was able to get this internship because of the people I had worked with through high school.

Everything, my coworkers were super nice and always available to help me in anyways needed. I could tell that the company cared about their interns and I was able to learn a lot.

It’s a lot of the same thing but there were opportunities to go to events or different sectors I just had to ask.

Advice

Invest in nice waterproof shoes and maybe even some rain pants.

I wish I would have a more consistent work schedule, I never knew what I was going to do when I went to work. It was assigned to me the morning of.

What I liked

This internship taught me so much in such a short time. The work environment is very supportive and there is a large network of people who want to help you succeed. As in intern at Nutrien you will be scouting a lot of fields for disease, nutrient deficiencies, insects, and weeds. Interns were also asked to deliver chemical product to farms and assist with plot work. No day is ever the same.

What I wish was different

I think a lot of people would have liked a little more training before being set loose to scout fields, but I personally learn better figuring things out on my own.

Advice

This is an amazing internship for anyone who is majoring in any agriculture related field. This is definitely an opportunity to take advantage of.

What I liked

The agronomy aspects of the job.

What I wish was different

The workload is too seasonal. There is a high workload in spring and fall, but very little to do in summer and winter. Many of the job duties in this position are not related to agronomy, there is a lot of delivery.
