Clinical Assistant Program Nurse Extern - Pediatric ICU
May - August 2019 • New York City, NY
What I liked
I loved working in the PICU because I was paired with a nurse preceptor for the summer and could ask her all of my questions as well as learn from everyone else on the floor. It was a glimpse into 12 hour shifts as a nurse, and was definitely a rewarding experience. I had a lot of hands on experience and worked on my basic nursing skills and building rapport with patients and their families.

All the interns were extremely welcomed. They put us through workshops and seminars that I learned a lot from, experience that I could not get from school. This is the top cancer hospital in the nation and had the most advanced technology and an amazing work culture.
What I wish was different
There was not a lot of information given ahead of time. Usually events are notified less than a week before it happens.

Lead Research Assistant
May 2017 • New York City, NY
What I liked
I love working at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center because it is closely aligned with the field I want to work in after graduation. It is also fulfilling to work in such a highly reputed cancer center. I also love my co-workers and supervisor and their lifestyles. Although they are indulged in the work and research they do, they still give a lot of time to their families and bring in their relatives and friends for events, conferences and talks. I love how everyone at MSK is treated as an equal and how so many different opportunities are available within the company apart from research.
What I wish was different
I don't think anything should be different personally.
Advice
I would advice interns to really build strong relationships with their supervisors and co-workers and along with that network within the company as much as possible.

Clinical Assistant Program (CAP)
May - August 2017 • New York City, NY
What I liked
Everything! I learned so much which only benefited me during the first semester of senior year. The exposure and experience was so unique. As we do get a ton of experience through our clinical rotations throughout the year, this really gave you the opportunity to spend a lot more time on a specific unit of interest, while learning about things you may have never learned throughout the year. MSK is also only oncology, something we do not have a specific clinical rotation for, so I gained a lot of new knowledge on this type of nursing.
What I wish was different
Nothing. It was an amazing experience, that I highly recommend!
Advice
My personal opinion is that getting an externship after your junior year is extremely important! Also try to apply and work somewhere that you could see yourself working after graduation. MSK has a very high return rate of the CAPs (Clinical Assistant Program). It is a very competitive program to be selected for, however, their goal is to train you (think of it as a 10 week interview) so that you will return after graduation. MSK also loves Villanova nurses and has a very large alumni network!

Student Intern
June - July 2019 • Hauppauge, NY
What I liked
I loved the learning/teaching environment Memorial Sloan Kettering Skin Cancer Center provided for me during my internship. The support staff, nurses, and doctors were all so nice and knowledgeable. They made time to answer my questions and provide insight about how medicine has impacted their day to day lives. They made sure to include me in their roles and provide a wonderful shadowing experience.
What I wish was different
I wish the program was a bit longer than 4 weeks so I could have gained even more experience!
Advice
Ask questions! Don't be afraid to ask about things you don't know and for reading materials about certain conditions. It's extremely interesting to discover things about the skin you had no idea about.

What I liked
There was great structure to the program, a lot of other interns, and all the people at Sloan are amazing.
What I wish was different
The hours; I started at 7am each morning and ended at 315pm. I wish it was pushed back in the day a bit, but I think these hours are normal for hospital type settings.
