Employee Relations Intern

August 2023 • Hershey, PA

What I liked

I loved being able to help the team members in more ways than I have before in any other job. My management has be wonderful and I look forward to working the rest of the term

What I wish was different

The only thing I wish is that I had more access to the schedule. Since it is an out of state job, it is hard to pick up shifts.

Advice

Go in with an open mind. Be prepared to work independently, even during training. Always ask questions!

Leadership Development Intern

May - August 2023 • Hershey, PA

What I liked

The flexibility and willingness to get to know the interns. The family environment with the other interns in all departments. Also, the leadership experience as a supervisor was a great attribute to my resume.

What I wish was different

I wish the pay was higher for the amount of effort I put into the position. Also, the hours were not ideal for having other summer plans or wanting to take vacations.

Advice

If you are looking for an outdoor experience filled with fun this is right for you! This position is the opposite of an office job. In any department, you will be on your feet and outside all day.

Leadership Development Intern

May - August 2021 • Hershey, PA

What I liked

I enjoyed the leaders of our program. They had our best interests in mind the entire time, especially since we were the inaugural class for this internship. I also really enjoyed the people that I worked with everyday.

What I wish was different

I wish the time we spent learning and enhancing our leadership skills had been more. There was only 3 hours, once a week dedicated to it, and 5 other days of the week we were simply working in the amusement park.

Advice

Understand that you will be an employee at Hershey Park, while also taking a leadership development class. The job requires different hours than normal, and you will most likely work weekends. However, you get what you put into it, so you have the ability to make it worth your while.

Food & Beverage Concessions Assistant Team Leader

May - August 2021 • Hershey, PA

What I liked

I love the connections I made at my time of the internship. I met people I would of never crossed paths until Hershey Park. They provided housing if that is a requirement on your internship search. The company is really flexible with scheduling. A great perk when you want to work and still enjoy your summer. They do promote leadership development through the program such as moving up to an assistant team lead or head team lead. If you are hard worker, and your team leads like you can be promoted or ask to stay longe/come back. Lastly, you get all the free candy you want and free park passes.

What I wish was different

Read this before applying... BE VERY CAREFUL with what department you pick!!!!!! You won't be able to transfer department and each one of them have their own struggles. I wish they had a transportation to and from the housing complex to the park. The commute from the complex and the park is on average 20 minutes. Even longer on holidays and events. So highly advise to have a car or a friend to carpool with. The starting pay isn't that great when you come in. If you move up to more leadership positions the pay increases but not greatly. I suggest to either (1) have another source of income, (2) put in some hours at the park, or (3) obtain a leadership position to make a decent wage. One of the biggest issues and struggles I had at the park was the elements!!!!!!! My first couple of weeks there it was raining and cold. After that pass it was blazing hot almost everyday. My stand could reach almost 100 degrees between the ovens, smokers, the temp, and asphalt. Come with water and a energy drink everyday to stay hydrated.

Advice

Come into this internship open-minded and ready to work.

Ride Operator

May - July 2021 • Hershey, PA

What I liked

I like the entire experience. There were days I was tired and did not want to work, and days that I enjoyed beginning to end, but I appreciate every part of the experience because I learned so much about myself by working at an amusement park. I’m thankful that I was given the opportunity to be a ride operator, because it’s not a job that I’ve known to be common. My favorite part of the internship was our weekly Leadership classes, and I appreciate Marie Conley’s willingness to always help us grow at work, and essentially, as people.

What I wish was different

I wish the pay was higher, we could choose different schedules, and we didn’t work so many days in a row.

Advice

Keep a positive mindset. It’s hard, but keep pushing for Success anyway. Stand up for yourself in all things, and discern the best place to use your precious energy and your precious time.

Lifeguard

June 2018 • Hershey, PA

What I liked

My job as a lifeguard is one of the best things I have ever done. Starting in shallow water in 2018, I learned first aid, customer service, and achieved a greater sense of empathy and purpose. Specifically, when I was promoted to Special Facilities (or deep water) in 2019, I worked at the wave pool almost everyday, and I saved 7 people from drowning over the course of the summer. I also exceeded an Ellis & Associates audit and was recognized as Outstanding Employee.

What I wish was different

I wouldn't change a thing. Some people didn't like our training sessions in the morning or after the park closed, but they were the highlights of my day. I had some bad days with customers at times, but I really love my job.

Advice

The first time I took the training, I failed because I was nervous at test outs. But I went back and passed the second time and it was one of the best decisions I have ever made. My advice to anyone who doesn't succeed the first time is to try again. NEVER give up! If you fail at something it can only make you stronger, provide you with more knowledge and experience. I went back and now I exceed audits and save lives. I am a much better person because of my experience and my decision to give it another try. I encourage people to do the same, as it is worth another try.

Wardrobe Technician

May - August 2019 • Hershey, PA

What I liked

I like working with clothing and in a theater setting. New things happened every day with our set and crew and it was very exciting.

What I wish was different

I wish that the management would have been more organized. Also having one day off a week was difficult.

Advice

This job is very exciting and fast paced. Not many difficulties if you have experience in theater. Only downside is it lasts only asking as Hershey Park is open in the summer, and you get 1 day off a week.
