What I liked

Company culture. I really felt like the employees wanted me to succeed. They went out of their way to meet and discuss things with me. Compared to other internships I've held, I felt much more supported. There was also a lot of overlap with other departments which allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of the insurance agency as a whole.

What I wish was different

The work that I was assigned didn't spark an interest in me. While the employees were lovely, insurance can be a dull industry and I felt that in the software department. I was using antiquated software and I didn't feel like I was creating something exciting. There were definitely exciting departments, even within the technology department, but I didn't happen to be in one.

Advice

If you work at The Hanover, I'd highly recommend networking with as many people as possible. They have a diverse array of employees who all have a great deal of advice to offer.

Project Management Intern

What I liked

It was extremely fast-paced, challenging and dynamic. The internship program was well-run and designed to help interns explore fields of their interest while working on challenging projects in their area of expertise.

What I wish was different

There isn’t anything I would change about the program.

Advice

Don’t be afraid to network and explore fields outside of the one you’re interning in - it’s an extremely friendly and collaborative environment!

Personal Lines Underwriting Intern

What I liked

Very detailed oriented, organized, and very generous to letting interns develop professional/personal skills. The best part, was having a 1 on 1 meeting every Friday with a upper level manager.

What I wish was different

More time, more in depth projects.

Advice

Have lots of insurance background, there is a ton of inspections included in this. Reach out more to employees within and they will help a ton, also memorizing state underwriting guidelines for the hub.

What I liked

My experience at Hanover was awesome. They had me doing real work and working on numbers and projects for the company.I got real world, hand-on experience. We also got weekly time to be with the other interns and learn about every department within the company which was invaluable.

What I wish was different

Nothin, the internship was honestly a perfect fit for me.

Advice

Work your hardest and participate every day so you get the most out of the experience!

Underwriting analyst - Management Liability

What I liked

I really enjoy the nature of management liability insurance coverage. Specifically, underwriting and pricing the risk by developing a thorough understanding of financial analysis and the applicant's nature of operations as it pertains to requested coverages.

What I wish was different

I wish I learned about the difference of insurance coverages at DePaul. I only worked on mathematical pricing methods and reserves for life insurance.

Advice

Actively apply and be alert of opportunities on all platforms. Be prepared for the interview. If a company is public, listen to their conference earnings call and take notes. Always send a thank you letter afterwards either via email or handwritten. But make sure to elude to specific points of the interview that you either enjoyed or are excited about/how you would make a good fit for the role.
