What I liked

I like working on projects that go toward products or improvements for a company. My supervisor shows me the steps that follow each of my completed projects so I have an idea of where the work I do goes. I enjoy having an opportunity to get out of the Mac bubble and experience a workday in Minneapolis. While it is a lot of work, I enjoy having a new setting and different projects to work the parts of my brain that are idle during school. I've come to understand the nuances of a real workday and see what the Minneapolis work buzz is like. Prior to this internship, I haven't had much time to explore beyond the Macalester Groveland neighborhoods. Now, I have a solid understanding of Minneapolis skyways, Twin Cities public transportation, and local businesses.

What I wish was different

I wish I had better planned for the one hour commute each way on public transportation. The commute impacts the length and frequency of my shifts even when a significant portion of my day is available. I had to start the internship this summer because I wouldn't be able to fit 10 hours per week into my semester schedule simply because the commute takes up too much of my available time slots.

Advice

Internships are very time consuming during the semester. They are a great experience, but make sure you have time to put forth your best self and also be able to prioritize your school work.
