What I liked

Working at Getinge has truly exceeded my expectations. First, the work I do as an engineering intern is very meaningful and I truly feel like I am an important part of my department. On a daily basis, I assist the production engineers with different processes related to the manufacturing of our medical devices. It is also very clear that everyone at Getinge truly cares about the interns learning and growing professionally. During the Summer 2020 internship experience, the HR internship team managed to put together an extensive program to help the interns understand more about the overall organization as well as improve skills related to networking, communication, and resumes. Despite working virtually, everyone at Getinge was truly understanding and accommodating in ensuring that the interns got the most out of their internship. One of the best aspects of working at Getinge has been the overall culture. You can truly tell that everyone is extremely passionate and happy to be making a difference in the lives of others.

What I wish was different

Advice

One piece of advice I would share is that you are in full control of your experience. Meaning, you need to take charge and initiate things that you are interested in. If you have questions, ask them.

Supplier Quality Intern

What I liked

Being that Getinge is my first industry experience, when I began I really did not comprehend the variety of intricate divisions within the company and more importantly, their cohesive functions. I wasn’t even sure I completely understood the department I was hired for and their respective responsibilities. However, over my past few months at Getinge, I’ve gained exposure to fields I wasn’t even aware existed prior to my internship. The size of a global company and finding where you belong can definitely be overwhelming, but I’ve come to realize the unlimited opportunities for growth that come along with that. And although large, Getinge’s core values of passion and collaboration hold true throughout the company- giving every employee a sense of significance in their part to saving lives.

What I wish was different

Three months into my internship, we made the transition to work from home as an attempt to stop the spread of Covid-19. This was a difficult adjustment, as the only form of collaboration allowed must now occur through a laptop screen. If I could go back, I would have taken the time to network with my team and colleagues better in person beforehand- It’s important to get to know people outside of daily work tasks. Fortunately, the HR Team did a fantastic job at transforming the Internship Orientation Program to an online setting while providing the necessary tools of inclusion and collaboration even from behind our screens.

Advice

I have a quote here of something the HR Team continuously repeated throughout our Internship Program: “You are the next generation of Getinge.” This really resonated with me because it made me feel as though I was a part of something greater- almost like we are a “class” of interns and the HR Team, our coworkers and managers, are all doing their absolute best to provide us with the training necessary to “graduate” this program. And seeing the passion they all have in doing so, truly inspired passion within me. The necessary resources to expand your skillset and career are more than promoted here at Getinge, it’s all about what you make of it! Take advantage.

What I liked

I liked how welcoming and educational the internship program is. Getinge was able to find a very specific role for me within the company. I also liked how open and friendly all of my co-workers have been as an intern.

What I wish was different

Despite starting in the office and then going to work from home, Getinge has been able to successfully transition the summer program into an amazing virtual internship program. My only wish is that i was able to be in the office more often.

Advice

I would say to not be afraid to ask questions. Also, have your supervisor review your work in order to make sure your doing it right. All to often you may be asked to do a task , then find out you did it wrong and have to start over.

Manufacturing Engineering Intern

What I liked

Getinge has a fantastic company culture, strongly facilitated by their HR & Recruitment Staff. It offers an excess of opportunities to learn and grow as an employee through its programs such as LinkedIn Learning and a multitude of company-sponsored workshops. It holds meetings for people of disadvantaged backgrounds such as women of Getinge events, which provides a strong support system for women & their home/other responsibilities.

What I wish was different

Nothing, great company.

Advice

I would suggest keeping logs of your progress. Managers or even regular coworkers like to ask what you're up to in completing a project. Writing down what has been done and what is needed for each task, or what is preventing it from moving forward is a great way to demonstrate that you both know what you're doing, and to figure out what you do not understand from an assignment.

What I liked

Being a year-long, full-time co-op, this was definitely a very immersive work experience. I was able to assist engineers with many different types of projects. I felt like a real part of the production engineering team and that my work and contributions made an impact.
