SAP Specialist Temp

June 2019 • Grand Island, NY

What I liked

This is a great company to work for! The atmosphere is incredible. The stress level is low. The people are super nice and caring. Everyone wants everyone to succeed.

What I wish was different

The actual work was a little monotonous at times. A lot of repetition and the company ultimately decided to stick with there original way of running there Maintenance Department instead of switching to SAP, which was frustrating.

Advice

Have more a plan before diving into a project. The project I worked on was really repetetive and we had to go back and change a lot, when it all could have done from the start if we knew exactly how to execute the project.

Engineering Intern

June - October 2019 • Grand Island, NY

What I liked

Fresenius Kabi offered a very enjoyable internship program that provided interns with genuinely valuable experiences. Interns were able to take ownership over their projects and become involved in different aspects of the manufacturing plant operations. I gained insight into the world of pharmaceutical manufacturing and learned about things like cGMP (Current Good Manufacturing Practices), maintaining compliance, making audit-able changes to the facility or production, following SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures), creating project documentation, interdepartmental collaboration, communicating with contractors and vendors, and so many more transferable skills. The managers and other personnel were very proactive about involving interns in meaningful projects and always checked in to see if we were enjoying our time. We were often asked if there was anything specific we would like to learn or see within the plant and were encouraged to reach out if we wanted to engage with a specific aspect of plant operations. Interns were set up for success and were given training and support in the tasks they were asked to complete.

What I wish was different

I wish the internship had been a little more focused on biomedical science. However, this is a manufacturing plant and there is little for them to provide in this area in the first place, so it should not be an expectation going into it. If you are looking for a more scientific internship, the Fresenius Kabi site on Grand Island has Chemistry and Microbiology departments that offer internships as well. All internships will most likely involve a heavy focus on documentation. Although I did not get biomedical-engineering-specific experience out of this, I still find my time here extremely valuable. I was able to see a lot of concepts from my engineering curriculum put in practice (for example, fluid mechanics, CAD, programming, decision matrices, Gantt charts, etc.). I also got a good look at engineering project management, both through carrying out my own project and through working closely with my manager.

Advice

Success in this internship and in this field is dependent on learning as much as you can about the facility and the flow of work and processes here by asking as many questions as necessary. It is also essential that you can communicate effectively and collaborate with many different people from different departments. Get to know the people you are working with and around and this will make getting things done a little easier.

Marketing Intern

April - August 2019 • Lake Zurich, IL

What I liked

Great pay in a unique location near the city

What I wish was different

Putting another intern “ in charge” of me when we had different areas of expertise caused some frustration because it kept me from performing to the best of my abilities. This is something I discussed with management and has been rectified for the future.

Advice

It is what you make of it, I had a lot of different projects I was able to get involved in and work with. The other interns are people you can make a long lasting relationship with and this company provides massive opportunities for employees.

Production Engineering Intern

June 2018 • Grand Island, NY

What I liked

People are here to help you out if you have a confusion regarding anything if they can or will direct to people who are more acclimated to the roles. The project I am assisting in is relevant to the company's goals. Working with medicine is important, as we are dealing with people's lives and I love how managers here take their roles seriously as well as groom interns here to be a professional.

What I wish was different

Some days, it's slow for interns, so we have to ask around if we can help.

Advice

There are many procedures to read in the first few weeks at the company, so it might get boring, but after that phase has passed, things pick up really quick, so we have to be vigilant and accurate as possible with the projects that you have been assigned or assisting a manager in.

Analytical Development Intern

June - August 2018 • Skokie, IL

What I liked

My internship gave me the opportunity to experience the pharmaceutical industry and network with professionals. It was great to apply my academic experience and learn the difference between academic lab standards and industry lab standards.

What I wish was different

Due to cGMP regulations implemented by the FDA, I really didn’t get hands on experience. I mostly worked at the computer and used excel and was trained on a variety of instruments, but wasn’t able to use them.

Advice

Even if you feel you aren’t doing anything at your internship, make the most of it by talking to coworkers about their experiences and advice. Make sure you leave on a good note and keep in touch with your manager.
