Research Assistant
June - August 2019 • Boca Raton, FL
What I liked
I loved being able to learn how to do research tasks in my field in a low pressure environment at my own pace. I really enjoyed being able to work closely with the professor leading the research, as I'm interested in pursuing a similar career path. This opportunity gave me the chance to learn the basics of research assisting, and was instrumental in helping me get a much more competitive research assistant at a prestigious lab in NYU College of Global Public Health.
What I wish was different
I wish the topic we were researching was more interesting/relevant to what I want to do, but I really can't complain because I did get familiar with many processes which are the same in research regardless of the topic of study.
Advice
Reach out to local professors who have similar interests to you over the summer! Professors who do research alone are ALWAYS happy to add on an unpaid Research Assistant. I'd recommend choosing a professor who teaches in your area of study as well, because they will be willing to help you learn many things relevant to your major, and you'll be much more prepared to go back to your own university and partake in courses that you now have background knowledge in. Don't just search internship databases, because oftentimes they can be really competitive opportunities and many professors who aren't actively seeking Research Assistants are often still willing to take them on because its free assistance to their research! You may receive a stipend at the end of your work with the professor to compensate your time.

Chemistry Research Intern

I enjoy everything about my research. I like how my P. I. allows me to learn and grow while showing me techniques I have never used before. I also enjoy how I have graduate students to help me understand the day to day activities of the lab.
What I wish was different
I wish I had been able to start before COVID-19. This is just to see what lab research was like before all the new regulations.
Advice
Do not be afraid to ask questions. I was always worried about looking incompetent, or just not remembering something from my studies. They would rather you ask for help then go on blindly and they enjoy teaching undergraduates.
