What I liked

I loved the people I worked with, and being able to work for the department of my major and forming better relationships with my professors daily.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have had more to do. Summer jobs often get slow on campus. However, this was very nice for me to complete homework and prepare for study abroad during my down time.

Advice

Forming good relationships with people you work with can make or break your entire experience. Put yourself out there, and work hard!

Political Science Research Assistant

What I liked

Being in touch with Professor David Brown and working closely with my group.

What I wish was different

Nothing, I had a great experience.

Advice

Apply! I was always intimidated by the idea of internships because I had never had one and I figured no one wanted to hire someone without experience. I think assisting and contributing projects at your school is a great and easy way to start!

What I liked

I liked having a group of coworkers I could rely on for work/school/personal things.

What I wish was different

I wish there was a more flexible schedule. The minimum hours is 10, but I was also taking 18 credits at one point. So it was extremely difficult to balance work and school. Unfortunately my grades suffered for it.

Biology Research Intern

May - July 2019 • San Jose, CA

What I liked

I loved learning about disease ecology hands on in the field. I wasn't sure it would be for me, but I was very rewarded for pushing outside my comfort zone. I really loved working hands on with amphibians and learning via trial and error with my mentors. I also met an array of incredible and passionate people at the research station from universities all over the country, and made many friends.

What I wish was different

I had to take one online class during the internship, which kept me very busy. I wish I hadn't had to do that so I could have more time to explore the surrounding area in my time off.

Advice

Stay positve and hungry for improvement! There isn't time to be embarrassed about your mistakes. Learn from them, laugh them off, and keep trying to be little faster, a little more knowledgable, a little kinder tomorrow. Your attitude matters so much on a team that spends long days together crammed into a pickup truck with loads of gear. Think about what you can do to be a person that people would be happy to work a twelve hour day with.

Undergraduate Research Assistant

June 2019 • Boulder, CO

What I liked

I love the hands-on experience of working with participants and collecting and dumping data

What I wish was different

nothing, I really enjoy my time at the IBG

Advice

It is diefinetly worth doing undergraduate research in a field similar to what you want to go to graduate school for. As I want to get my masters in Genetic Counseling, the Institute of Behavioral Genetics has been a great starting point in getting my feet wet in my specific career field.
