Camp Carl

Camp Counselor Unit Leader

May - August 2021 • Ravenna, OH

What I liked

I loved opportunities to meet with the counselors every week, getting to check in on them physically, mentally, and spiritually. I also really loved the “refining” that I experienced in my conversations and interactions with them.

What I wish was different

I wish we had hired more staff, as we were understaffed for the summer (due to adjusting with Covid mandates).

Advice

As the director says, “This is the hardest job you’ll ever love.” Give of yourself fully, as kids might just experience Christ because of it.

Advice

It is a service experience because the pay is not much. Throughout this experience, I grew more as a person, and I developed dozens of lifelong friendships. It taught me what working hard means, time management, people skills, and responsibility. If you work here, go in with an open heart and an open mind. If you do this, you will be changed.

What I liked

The kids! Everyday we spent time caring for the children.

What I wish was different

The hours! I would’ve loved to come home at night after my day camp kids left to replenish for the next day.

Advice

Make sure to get your rest and be ready to make friends :)

Camp Counselor

What I liked

I LOVED working at Camp Carl this past summer! The staff is amazing, the director, Tom Sullivan, has a huge servant's heart for the kids and the staff, and the vision of the camp is aligned with biblical values and principles. The camp works with cancer patients from Akron Children's Hospital, low-income or foster families, as well as churches and communities from both near and far. If you believe the LORD is leading you to work here this summer, you will surely not regret it!

What I wish was different

Sometimes I felt that I had to fight for opportunities that were entrusted into the hands of people that worked there longer, but once I stepped out of my comfort zone, I found that leadership was receptive to my requests. I wish that the summer would have never ended!

Advice

God is sustaining! Any camp counseling job (or ministry opportunity in general) requires all of you. For me, this provided the challenge of balancing both loving campers and staff well, while taking two summer classes and battling illness. But as Paul says in Philippians 4, "My God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus." Surrender it all to Him; He is not surprised by the situations that surround you, but deeply loves you and cares about you personally. Trust Him always, you'll need Him more than you know.

What I liked

Everything. Best job I have ever had. The community, the kids, being able to do what I want to do for a career, etc. were all great. The HAPPIEST and LOVING place on Earth.

What I wish was different

The pay was not great, but it was all worth it.

Advice

Even when you are exhausted physically or mentally, keep going because you will regret not being there 100%, but also do not forget to take care of yourself.
