What I liked

The friendly environment and interesting work!

What I wish was different

I wish the HR team was a bit more efficient and communicative.

Advice

Meet as many people as possible and shadow as many teams as you can. I shadowed teams I thought I had no interest in and was pleasantly surprised by how much I ended up enjoying them.

Analyst (Investment Banking)

June - August 2018 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I liked the structure of the program-the way it was oriented towards helping the summer analysts learn. They have very little expectation of any previous finance knowledge beyond the basics which fostered a friendly environment conducive to improvement. By the end of the summer we were being treated and staffed on projects as if we were full time analysts.

What I wish was different

I wish that the career center gave more insight into the process of networking into specific product/coverage groups after I received my offer because I was unaware that was something we were supposed to do and as a result was behind the curve and placed in a product group that by chance ended up being wonderful and full of great people but not where I see myself long term.

Advice

Make sure to do your research about the different groups, reach out to your interviewers and try to figure out what group is the best fit for your summer.

Equity Research Analyst

June - August 2021 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I liked the steep learning curve, opportunities to network, work with and learn from experts in the industry. As an intern, I was given a lot of responsibilities, including writing sections of reports, modeling, participating in Earnings calls and working on two large projects throughout the 8 weeks. It was an extremely rewarding experience and the culture was incredible. Everyone was willing to take time out of their day to teach me new concepts and provide me with tasks to do. My senior analyst in particular was very keen to allow me to take part in day-to-day responsibilities as much as possible.

What I wish was different

Given the virtual nature of my internship, it was difficult to meet other interns and associates in person. I wish there would have been larger and more abundant in-person events for us to network even further. In addition, I wish the internship could have been longer in length in order to learn even more and engage in the workplace for longer.

Advice

If you are an intern, regardless of where you work, make sure to always ask a lot of questions, be keen to take initiative and volunteer to do tasks and overcommunicate updates to your team and higher-uppers.

Technology Analyst

July - August 2020 • Whippany, NJ

What I liked

I loved that Barclays went above and beyond to make sure that we still had a meaningful experience in light of having to make this a virtual internship. Staff from all levels were open and giving of their time and put together robust projects for us to work on. I didn't feel like I was doing busy work and I truly felt like I was able to make valuable contributions to my team's output.

What I wish was different

Being virtual was the best option for everyone's safety. However, I fell in love with the campus setting during the interview process and would have loved to be on site.

Advice

Most times as interns we are afraid to make mistakes and don't think we have valuable insight to add because we lack experience. One of the best pieces of advice I got this summer was to be bold and not be afraid to take risks or make big steps. If you have an idea you should voice it. If you think you can improve a process or add value to a conversation let people know.

Operations Intern

July - August 2020 • Whippany, NJ

What I liked

In the internship I got to work on a meaningful project that is still being used. The internship also allowed me to network with folks in a variety of groups within operations which gave me a fuller understanding of the depth this department allows individuals.

What I wish was different

I would have loved the internship to have been the full 10 weeks! With COVID-19, I think Barclays did an amazing job at giving us interns a meaningful experience, I just wanted more time!!

Advice

Network, network, network! Take the time to be busy and meet new people. You never know what connections you might need later down the road.

What I liked

Good team culture, no belief in "face time" Great pay Steep learning curve - learned a lot about excel and how to build a financial model Nice office

What I wish was different

I wish I worked less, although long hours are expected for the industry

Advice

Investment banking is a great place to start your career and really isn't as bad as people say it is in terms of work load and hours. It's a wonderful credential on your resume and for somebody trying to pay off their loans, the pay is stellar and you recieve a bonus for signing a full time return should you get one. However, investment banking isn't the ONLY path to an affluent or successful career. The stigma around untraditional paths in finance is breaking as people begin to value work life balance more and personal fulfillment from work. Therefore, I suggest you really evaluate what you want to do with your life and consider the numerous ways you can get there before starting to recruit, especially when banking recruiting has been pushed up to be so early. And always carry a notebook!

What I liked

Overall great experience, well structured and immersive internship for those looking to start a career in Markets.

What I wish was different

Choosing a rotation - you're generally forced to network yourself into the third rotation when you're on your second. So you end up networking with your team from first rotation, trying to manage work from second, and network with a possible third; thus, mixing your agenda and taking a lot of time from your second.

Advice

Even if one team genuinely likes you and says they'd want you back - come in every single day as if it were your first. Eager to learn and engage in insightful conversations.
