Software Engineering Intern

June - August 2019 • Bothell, WA

What I liked

Great culture, tons of fun and exciting projects to work on with lots of time for mentorship and learning. My personal boss and all mentors were extremely kind and understanding of what I wanted to do and how things were progressing. My work felt valuable and beneficial.

What I wish was different

The pay was definitely not as competitive for the Seattle area, however, the main issue around that is 2500$ can barely fit one month of rent in Seattle much less 3. The hardware was also severely outdated and complicated a lot of work or slowed it significantly.

Advice

Check out their compensation package to make sure you can afford to go wherever it is. Although I wouldn't recommend this as a first choice above the big N, it would get a strong recommendation as to the culture and potential work is well worth the takeback in compensation. A note, my experience seems to be rather unique because of my boss as he was very much focused on having us get as much out of it as we could. Some of my peers did not have a good time due to apathetic managers and such so take this with a grain of salt.

Technical Business Manager Intern

June - August 2019 • Middletown Township, NJ

What I liked

I enjoyed the work life balance, the culture of the company, the internship program, and the people that I worked with. Every intern was extremely talented in their own way and the internship program was designed to help us all learn more about cutting edge technologies, business strategies, and corporate methodologies. The directors, mentors, and business partners gave meaningful work that could provide value to the company and gave guidance throughout the summer. When tired, there was ping pong, Mario Kart, Smash Bros, FIFA, and other recreational games that were available. There were many opportunities to grow and it was awesome working on a large campus with a Fortune 10 company.

What I wish was different

I wish there was free food in their cafeteria for lunch. Also, I wish their was an easier way to get around their large campus, such as scooters or bicycles.

Advice

Always be hungry to learn new things. It is important to be eager to grow and willing to absorb as much knowledge as possible. Classes at university can only teach you so much; largely, many of the useful skills are developed on the job and in the industry.

What I liked

I loved the number of connections I built amongst my fellow interns and full-time employees. The skills that I learned and improved on since my last summer internship came in handy with my summer project, and being able to collaborate and talk with fellow interns that I had met over the summer and from previous summers made me feel like I was not alone.

What I wish was different

I wish that I was able to be closer to my supervisor then in a remote location away from them and her team. In the end, it gave me a great learning experience on how to communicate through emails, video chats, and etc. effectively without losing anything in cyber translation.

Advice

Do not be afraid to ask for help. Asking questions is the most effective way to make sure things are done properly and timely. If you have to ask multiple times how to do things, that's okay. in the end it will be for everyone's benefit. Even asking for outside help and opinions is okay because having a fresh set of eyes can make the difference between looking over a small mistake or finding a better solution to a problem.

Software Engineering Intern

June - August 2019 • Middletown Township, NJ

What I liked

The office environment was very relaxed, while still maintaining a professional atmosphere. Projects were unique and allowed me to develop skills I would not have learned in school. New office space with open floor and dual/ultrawide monitors.

What I wish was different

While the projects I worked on were interesting, the requirements were not very well defined. I wish it was a bit more of a set plan, rather than figuring it out as we go. This experience definitely varies from person to person.

Advice

Establish a connection with the other interns in your program, it will make the summer very fun!
