JOB DESCRIPTION

The New Jersey Department of Agriculture (NJDA), Animal Health Diagnostic Laboratory (AHDL) seeks to enhance the economic vitality and life quality for all New Jersey residents by promoting healthy livestock and companion animals, enhancing the safety of animal-derived consumer products and protecting wildlife resources through disease control and enhancing understanding of disease. The pathology section of the AHDL plays a crucial role in fulfilling the mission of protecting animal and public health. The pathology section performs testing on carcasses as well as specimens derived from live animals. Under the direction of the a supervisory official in the Division of Animal Health, Department of Agriculture, the responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to: initiates animal tissue dissection and grossing; conduct tissue processing, embedding, and staining; maintains orderly storage systems for paraffin blocks, frozen blocks, and finished slides; maintains the inventory of supplies in pathology;  maintains supplies of fixatives, solvents, materials, and other supplies for preservation and processing of tissues into completed routine slides; prepares, maintains, and files lab records, observations, and worksheets; assists in specimen receiving, preparation, and examination; updating or retrieving data from the database or electronic files as requested; sorting and organizing paperwork; performs other duties as needed.

REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree, preferably hospital-based, college or university histotechnology program.

 

EXPERIENCE: Two (2) years of experience as a technician in a full-service histopathology laboratory.

 

NOTE: Applicants who do not possess a Bachelor's degree, may substitute additional experience as indicated above on a year-for-year basis with thirty (30) semester hour credits being equal to one (1) year of experience

 

CERTIFICATION: Histotechnician (HT) or Histotechnologist (HTL) certification or eligibility for certification issued by the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) is preferred.

 

LICENSE:  Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

FOREIGN DEGREES: Degrees and/or transcripts issued by a college of university outside of the United States must be evaluated by a reputable evaluation service at your expense. The evaluation must be included with your submission and failure to submit the required evaluation may result in an ineligibility determination.

 

LICENSE: Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in the State of New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

 

AUTHORIZATION TO WORKAppointee must be authorized to work in the United States according to the Department of Homeland Security, United States Citizenship, and Immigration Services regulations.

IMPORTANT NOTICE

Effective September 1, 2011, NJ PL 70 (NJ First Act), requires all State employees must reside in New Jersey, unless exempted under the law, or current employees who live out-of-state and do not have a break-in service of more than seven calendar days, as they are "grandfathered." New employees or current employees who were not grandfathered and who live out-of-state have one year after the date of employment to relocate their residence to New Jersey or request an exemption. Current employees who  reside in NJ must retain NJ residency, unless an exemption is obtained. Employees who fail to meet the residency requirements or obtain an exemption will be removed from employment.
