Job Description and Duties

Interested in joining a dedicated & diverse team with the Department of Fish and Wildlife's Wildlife Health Laboratory (WHL)? WHL is seeking a highly skilled, strongly self-motivated individual to serve as a Supervising Laboratory Assistant. Learn more about this unique opportunity!

Under the general direction of the Supervisor, this position will provide clinical and technical oversight of core laboratory operations and the WHL animal holding facility, including support staff, databases, laboratory information management system(s), equipment (e.g., autoclaves, microscopes, radiation machine), and fleet assets. Write and maintain standard operating procedures, processes, and protocols in coordination with senior staff. Oversee and assign Laboratory Health & Safety monitoring and hazardous waste disposal duties (e.g., biological materials, chemicals, pesticides); implement and maintain WHL radiation safety program. Prepare and review technical documents, grant reports, and protocols.

Supervising Laboratory Assistant I: CalCareers

This position is a 12-month Limited Term (LT) and may be extended up to 24 months or become permanent. During this 12-month Limited Term assignment, you will receive full health, dental, and vision benefits! You will also earn State Service and accrue monthly leave credits.

This position requires possession of a valid Class C Driver's License. Must maintain a clean driving record. The selected candidate may be required to provide a photocopy (front and back) of the license: Name as stated on the license, issuing state, DL #, Class, expiration. 

The selected candidate may be required to provide transcripts (may be unofficial).

Working Conditions

Ability to use a computer keyboard in a sitting and/or standing position several hours a day. Will interact with regional and branch staff, and members of the public via e-mail, telephone, and in-person. Must attend occasional meetings. Ability to wear a uniform, as needed. Ability to drive up to 8-hours. Must feel comfortable with potential close contact with imperiled and/or confined wild animals. Background check required. This is a full-time limited term position for 2 years. The position may become permanent.
