Description

The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission is a nationally recognized and award winning agency providing land use planning; stewardship of natural, cultural and historic resources; and delivery of recreation programs to the communities it serves. The agency is seeking an Event Services Manager. This position provides management, programmatic, and supervisory oversight to the Event Services Department at the Prince George’s Sports & Learning Complex within the Aquatics and Athletic Facilities Division. The position is responsible for contracting, coordinating and overseeing a wide variety of events, meetings and athletic programs/competitions. The incumbent will supervise two on-site career staff; to include the Youth and Community Programs Assistant and the Assistant Manager of Event Services.

The M-NCPPC offers a competitive salary range of $63,891 - $113,151 at the Events Manager level with an excellent benefits package including generous leave, extensive health coverage, deferred compensation plan, employer's retirement plan, and work-life programs. The hiring range for this position will be $63,891 – midpoint of the advertised salary range and will be based on the candidate’s qualifications and experience.

Examples of Important Duties

 

  • Conduct research on market rates to develop rental rates and packages for all aspects of events (i.e. meetings/conferences, gymnastics meets, swim meets, track and field events).
  • Maintains revenue/expenditure records.
  • Work closely with Venue Managers to ensure client’s requests are met.
  • Works with the Operations Department of the Sportsplex to ensure that all aspects of maintenance, preparation and cleanup are coordinated in advance of every event.
  • Hire, Supervise, and oversee the onboarding and training of seasonal/intermittent Event Staff.
  • Schedules and coordinates intermittent event teams to cover all aspects of security, safety, parking and crowd control.
  • Assist with coordinating seasonal/intermittent team coaches’ schedules as well as team training schedules.
  • Knowledgeable of safety and fire regulations and ensures all requirements are met on a regular basis.
  • Understands and enforces M-NCPPC insurance requirements with clients and guests.
  • Maintains and monitors all inventory control systems, financial reports and monitors revenue and expenditures.
  • Communicate with various cross-functional venues within assigned complex and in the Aquatics and Athletic Facilities Division to properly administer policies and procedures.
  • Attend, assist, and lead relevant meetings, workshops, and continuing education programs as required.
  • Provide guidance to subordinate staff on employee-related matters (i.e., disciplinary, training, recruitment, and selection, etc.).
  • Work extended hours, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Participate and perform Manager on Duty (MOD) responsibilities on a monthly basis.
  • Other duties and special projects, as assigned to include oversight of recreational programming as well as seasonal summer camps.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree and or
  • Three to Four years of progressive professional experience in convention services/sales, event/meeting planning or event management is preferred or
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience; and,
  • American Red Cross /CPR/AED and First Aid Certification
  • A valid driver’s license or ability to acquire one

Minimum Qualifications

 

  1. Bachelor’s Degree in Parks and Recreation, Facility Management, Recreation Management, Education, Business Administration, Physical Education, Communication, Leisure Services, or any related field.
  2. Two (2) years of responsible professional experience working in a facility related to parks, recreation, leisure services, or area of required specialty (e.g., arts, performing arts, equestrian, tennis, aquatics, gymnastics, ice rinks); including one (1) year as a facility manager, program coordinator or supervisor.
  3. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted, which together total six (6) years.
  4. Valid driver’s license in accordance with both State and Commission rules and regulations. Driver's license must be unencumbered by restrictions, revocations, suspensions or points that could limit the employee's ability to drive Commission vehicles or perform driving duties required of the position.
  5. Contingent upon area of assignment, some positions in this class may require valid: (a) operating license (e.g., county pool operator, childcare license) as appropriate; (b) First Aid, CPR, automated external defibrillator (AED) certifications; or (c) certifications as related to assignment (e.g., Lifeguard Instruction, Fundamentals of Gymnastics).
  6. Pass Commission medical exam.
