RESEARCH SCIENTIST III (EPIDEMIOLOGY/BIOSTATISTICS) - Quantitative Ecologist

Job Description and Duties

The position works with other three other scientists, who all report to the Senior Environmental Scientist Supervisor in the Science Support Unit of the Wildlife Branch. The Unit is responsible for supporting research that informs conservation and management of large mammals and other wildlife species. The position serves as a quantitative ecologist leading, and advising, on statistical design, data analysis and scientific inference for large, complex research projects. The position blends the skills of a biostatistician expert in the latest hierarchical modeling approaches (e.g., spatial capture recapture, integrated population models) and a wildlife ecologist who understands ecological theory and the latest wildlife survey methods (e.g., non-invasive genetic sampling, aerial counts, camera traps, GPS telemetry). The position coordinates closely with species coordinators, regional staff, and other program staff at CDFW, and with outside academics, to advance CDFW research objectives.

 

This position offers the possibility of an office-centered telework agreement based on the Department's current Telework Policy.

This position is a 12-month Limited Term (LT) and may be extended up to 24 months or become permanent.

 

If you currently have permanent status in your position and have passed probation, you have mandatory reinstatement rights into your former position at the end of this LT appointment. If you have not had prior permanent or probationary civil service status, you will be separated from state service.

Working Conditions

Should be able to work long hours in the office using a personal computer and keyboard at least several hours a day, sitting most of the time but may involve standing or sitting for brief periods. Fieldwork may be done occasionally in uneven terrain and involve hiking for extended periods and carrying a 30 pound backpack. Aerial surveys from a small fixed wing aircraft or helicopter may be done occasionally. Possession of a valid driver’s license is required. Must be able to safely operate a motor vehicle and equipment and be prepared to travel occasionally using a State vehicle.
