SAMS Media Internship: Scope of Work

 

Position Title: Media Intern
Department: Communications
Reports to: Senior Communications Officer (with oversight from Director of Communications)
Location: Remote or Washington, D.C. Office (Hybrid option available)
Duration: 3–6 months 

Time Commitment: 15-20 hours per week / Monthly Stipend Offered

 

Overview

 

The Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS) is seeking a creative, motivated, and mission-driven Media Intern to support its communications efforts across English and Arabic channels. The intern will assist in creating digital content, gathering stories, and drafting social media copy. They will also help research media contacts, monitor news coverage, and compile press clips. This role offers hands-on experience in bilingual content development, media monitoring, and nonprofit communications.

 

Key Responsibilities

 

Content Creation & Storytelling

  • Assist in developing multimedia content (graphics, short videos, reels, interviews) for SAMS platforms in both English and Arabic.
  • Help gather and edit stories from field staff, medical mission volunteers, and beneficiaries.
  • Draft compelling captions, headlines, and short scripts for digital channels.

     

Media Monitoring & Research

  • Research and reach out to journalists, influencers, and media outlets to help secure media coverage for SAMS.
  • Track media coverage of SAMS and relevant humanitarian developments.
  • Compile press clips and assist in publishing news media coverage across platforms.

     

Qualifications

 

  • Strong written and verbal proficiency in English and Arabic; ability to support translation, editing, and bilingual content development.
  • Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in communications, media, journalism, public relations, international affairs, or a related field.
  • Strong writing, editing, and storytelling skills across both visual and written formats.
  • Proficiency in Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, or other design/video editing tools is a plus.
  • Familiarity with social media management and basic analytics tools.
  • Interest in humanitarian issues, global health, and/or Middle East affairs.

     

Learning Outcomes

 

By the end of the internship, the intern will:

 

  • Gain hands-on experience creating bilingual content for social media, newsletters, and other digital platforms.
  • Build skills in story gathering, caption writing, and visual content development.
  • Learn how to monitor media coverage, compile press clips, and support journalist outreach efforts.
  • Develop a stronger understanding of nonprofit communications in a humanitarian context.
