Our Organization: San Diego Hunger Coalition (SDHC or Hunger Coalition) works collaboratively with community partners to create equitable access to food assistance in San Diego County, supported by research, education, and advocacy. SDHC is committed to ensuring that everyone has immediate access to 3 nutritious meals every day.
AmeriCorps Anti-Hunger Corps VISTA Program: The Anti-Hunger Corps VISTA program aims to reduce hunger and poverty and build the capacity of the agencies that address these issues. Hunger Free America (HFA), in conjunction with some of the nation’s most effective anti-hunger and poverty organizations, engages VISTA members and partnering organizations in moving families beyond the soup kitchen by breaking down barriers and providing improved access to healthful, nutritious foods.

Project Description: The San Diego Hunger Coalition, in partnership with Hunger Free America, is seeking a full-time VISTA member to play a critical role in the creation of an Outreach plan to eliminate the meal gap in San Diego County, built on collaboration, through a data-informed, community driven approach to ending hunger in San Diego County. This position is designed for a creative individual passionate about connecting with people as we work to saturate the region with resources so everyone knows where to get help in their time of need.
Responsibilities may include:
• Support the Community Engagement Manager in facilitating Hunger Free NavigatorTM training for agencies interested in learning more about food assistance resources. • Recruit new Resident Navigators to pilot volunteer program with newly created guidebook and create a tracking system for volunteers utilizing the knowledge gained from training.
• Research and support grant writing to sustain community empowerment program in the future.
• Assist in outreach efforts and attend collaborative meetings with community partners to find new partnerships to share resources (including but not limited to faith-based organizations, community clinics, schools, and affordable housing collaboratives).
• Work with community members to better understand their experiences accessing food assistance resources, including what works and what doesn’t. This may include conducting interviews and other research to create written and/or video best-practice success stories. • Conduct research to identify national best practices for engaging community members in accessing food assistance programs like CalFresh, school meals, WIC, senior meals, and food distribution sites.
• Develop toolkit to identify and combat barriers vulnerable populations face in accessing food assistance.
Preferred Skills:
• Knowledge of the social media landscape and social media analytics tools.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships across cultural differences.
• Ability to work independently and take projects from concept to completion.
• Preferably bilingual, English & one of the additional languages listed below. o Arabic, Burmese, Khmer, Chinese, Creole, Farsi, French, Hmong, Karen, Korean, Somali, Spanish, Swahili, Filipino, Tigrinya or Vietnamese
Time Commitment:
This is a one-year, full-time position beginning August 10, 2025. You are expected to be available for the needs of your community and project with a minimum of 35 hours a week. Because AmeriCorps VISTA service requires a full immersion in the project and community, there are restrictions on outside full-time employment, along with some restrictions on political and religious activities.
Housing & Transportation: You are responsible for finding your own housing and must have access to a vehicle.
PLEASE NOTE: The San Diego Hunger Coalition is currently working remotely five days a week. Applicants must live in San Diego County or can relocate for the duration of your service year.
