Legal Assistant
Brotman Law | Legal Assistant
We are excited to welcome you to Brotman Law. All of your past experience has simply been preparing you for the opportunity that you are about to step into.
We need smart and talent professionals, who are motivated to grow personally and professionally, and who seek challenge and excellence rather than comfort. We are a culture that knows what it is like to win, for our clients, our Firm, and ourselves. Who knew that tax law could be synonymous with fun and exciting?
Picture this: taxes are one of the three largest expenses for people and businesses. By helping to change someone’s tax situation, you directly impact their financial bottom line, which allows them in turn to provide better care for the people around them, including their employees and their families. We strive to provide as much value as possible for our clients and to figure out the ways they can best meet their goals, even when things get hard.
Our legal assistants are on the front line in helping our clients by anticipating their needs, are the go-between for them and our legal team, and work directly with our associates and senior attorneys on client projects. The nature of the problems we deal with are tremendously challenging at times and we deal with some serious stuff. It can be difficult, both professionally and personally, but also is incredibly rewarding. However, you will have the assistance of the best tax law firm around (if we do say so ourselves) and a team equally committed to our professional obligations and to your personal success, whatever that means to you. When you win, our clients win, and our team wins too.
Bottom line: This is a position where you can make a tremendous impact on the lives of our clients and is the starting point of growth and opportunity within our organization.
About The Job and The Right Person For It
Brotman Law is looking for a legal assistant:
- Legal assistants facilitate communications with our clients and the government, serving as the primary non-attorney contact for our client’s matters. This is a client-facing position and carries with it a lot of responsibility to help coordinate all of the moving pieces that we may encounter. Often times, the same client(s) come with multiple issues or matters.
- You are dynamic. Our legal assistants are not cogs in the machine, but agents for change. You are a member of our legal team and your voice will carry an increasing amount of authority as you gain experience. We take that very seriously, invest time and effort to expand your knowledge base, and all ideas at our Firm are welcome regardless of rank.
- You are a professional. Tax issues can be complicated and frustrating but working with our law firm should make the process as easy and transparent as possible. Clients are totally understanding of the fact that you are not a lawyer, but your confidence and poise, even in the face of uncertainty, will be sincerely appreciated. You may not have all the answers yourself but will work on behalf of them within the Firm to get those answers, keep them connected with the legal team, and get them what they need. Proactive communication, at all points in the process, is critical for success.
- You will work to create Brotman Law clients for life. Part of what we do and what makes our Firm great has nothing to do with tax. Through your training and experiences with the Firm, you will learn to meet people where they are and help them with a genuine compassion and understanding toward them. We don’t just help our clients solve their problems, we help them maximize their opportunities and meet their goals.
- You are supremely organized. Organization and attention to detail are keep attributes in what it takes to be successful in the position. Organization breeds efficiency and good legal assistants will do what they can to make everything more efficient for the team and for the client.
- You are fluid. Every day is a new adventure in our Firm because of the number of issues we deal with on a day-to-day basis. Your morning could be spent preparing for a California payroll tax audit before assisting on a complicated planning issue followed by the preparation work for a phone call with an IRS revenue officer on a collections issue. Flexibility and the ability to wear multiple hats will make you successful in this role.
- You are a team player. All of us are good at what we do, but our success individually depends on the contributions that we get from everyone around us. Having core competency in your position goes without saying, but the people in our firm make everyone around them better from the receptionist to the senior attorneys. Having a mindset of stepping in and providing as much value as you will take you far.
- You are a growth-oriented person and understand the opportunity that this position brings. We are all driven by our own individual goals, but growing the Firm gives us more resources to be better at what we do and facilitates our Firm helping you and others to build what you want to build. Legal assistant positions are not stepping stones, they are launch pads to whatever comes next for you. Legal assistant alumni have gone on to some really great things, both legal and non-legal, inside, and outside of our organization.
Responsibilities
• Assist the legal team in day-to-day operations on client matters. You will be synthesizing information, preparing and organizing litigation files, reconciling financial data, and helping to build the blocks of the foundation so that we can help our clients. Those blocks are built on facts and numbers.
• Facilitate communications, telephonic and written, with the client, the government, 3rd parties (i.e. other attorneys), and anyone else needed for the success of the client’s matter. You are the junior point of contact for the legal team (and there can be lots of contact).
• Advocate with government agents. After sufficient training and in certain settings, our legal assistants will sometimes serve as a proxy for our junior attorneys. For example, legal assistants frequently call the state government to obtain information, submit documents, and request things to help us cut through the red tape that exists at the state level.
• Organize client files. Following Firm protocols, legal assistants will make sure that all information/documents/notes are in the file, and everything is easy to access and understand.
• Provide matter updates to clients. At a minimum, we provide written monthly matter updates to clients, which provide transparency about what is going on with their matter.
• Facilitate referrals and help those with problems that the Firm cannot handle find someone who can help them (we don’t leave people hanging).
• Follow Firm information reporting protocols to help us better understand what types of clients and matters are engaging with the Firm, so the Firm can tailor itself to meet the needs to those clients.
• Other duties as may be assigned or that are needed to assist the Firm or be successful in your position.
Education And Experience
• We are looking for individuals with a strong track record of past success and growing accomplishment, which would be an indicator of future performance.
• B. A. degree with excellent performance in undergraduate studies.
• Strong communications skills with a professional and polished presence. Strong writing, speaking, and diplomacy skills.
• Strong leadership skills.
• A team player, someone not afraid to tackle problems, roll up their sleeves, and proactively anticipate client needs and challenges to make things as easy as possible.
Expected Results
• Our clients are better for having you on their team. Your efforts will translate into client success and “wins.”
• Our Firm is better for having you on our team. Your efforts will translate into advancing our Firm goals and preserving our standards.
• All client deadlines met.
• All client files keep in good working order.
• Execute actions necessary to meet Firm and individual quarterly objectives, especially individual learning objectives.
• 98% of assigned tasks are completed by the established due date.
Perks And Benefits
• We envision a total base compensation package of around $65,000 per year. Performance bonuses could be up to an additional $10,000-$15,000 per year. Exceptional candidates with a longer work history or higher salary requirements are encouraged to apply if they feel that they can excel in the position.
• Awesome health benefits including medical, dental, vision. We are committed to the health of our employees and our benefits reflect that.
• 401(k) match
• Generous and flexible unlimited PTO policy
• Paid holidays and sick time
• Others benefits provided by our Chief Happiness Officer
