Staff Accountant

POSITION SUMMARY: The Staff Accountant will provide accounting and finance support to the President & CEO for the overall financial and operational oversight and management of the Baltimore Curriculum Project (BCP) office and schools.  The Staff Accountant will be charged with executing the financial elements of the BCP strategic plan. The Staff Accountant must be adaptive and have the ability to make timely and effective adjustments to plans based on the changing needs of BCP and its schools. This role is generally responsible for creating and managing budgets; collecting, analyzing, and reporting information; and managing accurate financial controls and reporting for BCP schools. 

 

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES: Primary responsibilities of the Staff Accountant include, but are not limited to: 

  • Financial Reporting and Analysis
    • Review and analyze regular financial reports including monthly revenue and expense versus budget reports.  Share those reports and analysis with senior leadership, the BCP board and school principals. 
    • Develop the BCP annual budget with input from other members of senior leadership.
    • Prepare and analyze accounting reports and financial statements for internal and external reporting
    • Prepare accounts for audits by internal and external sources
    • Support other BCP staff with audits and proper filing of all required state and federal forms.
    • Complete analyses of financial results and projections, convey the results to the President and CEO and other members of the senior leadership. Develop recommendations based on such analysis.
    • Monitor the operating budgets of the schools. Work with the principals to ensure their ongoing understanding of their financial situation.
    • Develop and implement organization-wide reports to support effective communication on all finance matters across the organization.
  • Accounting and Administration (responsibilities in partnership with the HR & Purchasing Administrator)
    • Maintain a variety of accounts associated with the accurate accounting of the organization
    • Conduct quarterly reconciliations of accounts for audit purposes
    • Maintain balance and expenditure activity status for school and office programs
    • Provide assistance to HR and Purchasing staff
    • Conduct and participate in periodic audits of grant accounts.
    • Conduct monthly closing procedures and other year-end operations
    • Prepare detailed statistical reports and analyses
    • Participate in special accounting, financial, and procedural policy development
    • May train and support other professional and clerical office personnel 
    • Support proper maintenance of all accounting systems, functions, and records.
    • Ensure timeliness and accuracy of financial and management reporting for government funders, foundations, and board of directors.
    • Process and maintain accurate records for purchase order and non-purchase order invoices in a timely manner
    • Provide schools with technical assistance and training in manipulating their budgets
  • Special Projects
    • Consult and partner with other BCP and/or school-based staff on initiatives, as directed by BCP leadership.
