Hours: 16-32 hours per week (flexible to fit)
Compensation: $18 per hour
Duration: Flexible start and end dates to fit summer semester
Internship Overview:
The Downtown Norfolk Council is seeking a creative, enthusiastic, and self-motivated Content Creation Intern to join our Marketing and Communications team. This is a fantastic opportunity for an individual passionate about digital storytelling, community engagement, and the vibrancy of urban life to gain hands-on experience in a fast-paced, mission-driven organization. The intern will play an active role in showcasing the diverse attractions, businesses, events, and unique character of Downtown Norfolk to a wide audience.
Key Responsibilities:
Content Development:
Brainstorm, research, and create engaging content (written, visual, and video) with an emphasis on trending topics and formats.
Develop compelling narratives that highlight downtown businesses, cultural happenings, residential living, public spaces, and DNC initiatives.
Visual Content Creation:
Capture photos and short videos of downtown scenery, events, businesses, and community members.
Assist with basic graphic design tasks for social media posts, website banners, and promotional materials, adhering to DNC's brand guidelines.
Event Promotion & Coverage:
Support the promotion of DNC events (e.g., First Fridays, Restaurant Week, walking tours, holiday programs) through compelling digital content.
Provide on-site content creation support during select DNC events (may include some evening or weekend hours, planned in advance).
Social Media Management:
Assist in managing DNC's social media accounts, including content scheduling, posting, and community engagement (responding to comments and messages).
Help monitor social media trends and analytics to identify opportunities for increased engagement and reach.
Contribute to social media campaign planning and execution for DNC events and programs.
Qualifications:
Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a related degree program at a university OR deeply passionate about creating social media content
Creative thinker with the ability to generate fresh content ideas.
Familiarity with major social media platforms and best practices for engagement.
Intermediate photography and/or videography skills (experience with phone-based content creation is a plus).
Experience with graphic design tools (e.g., Canva, Adobe Creative Suite) is desirable.
Excellent organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks.
A genuine interest in and enthusiasm for Downtown Norfolk and community development.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
