Office Assistant

The Strategic Initiatives Department is integral to the Teamsters’ mission, overseeing communications, research, economics, capital strategies, and the Teamsters History Project. The department equips Teamsters affiliates with essential resources to excel in organizing, public relations, contract campaigns, audience expansion, and enhancing public perception. 

Position Summary:

The Office Assistant supports the Strategic Initiatives department with administrational and clerical tasks. Based in Washington, DC, this position operates full-time and in-person from the union’s headquarters. 

Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Office Support: 
    • Responsible for main department phone line, voicemail, receiving and forwarding messages.
    • Organizes and sorts in-office and outside mail.
    • Orders, organizes, and maintains office materials and the supply room.
    • Orders, organizes, and maintains kitchen supplies for the whole department.
    • Maintains the inventory of the department equipment.
    • Supports the department with internal meetings and conference rooms schedule.
  • Back-up Support:
    • Understands the process of approvals, writing memos, purchase orders, and travel requests and serves as a back-up when needed.
    • Understands the forwarding process of Strategic Initiatives inbox and serves as a back-up when needed.
  • Administrative Support:
    • Attends meetings, conferences, and events when needed. 
    • Completes ad-hoc projects and duties as assigned by the Director, Assistant Director, or their designee. 

This role requires a person with good organizational and people skills. Someone who is self-motivated and committed to advancing the interest of workers and their families represented by the Teamsters.

 

Education and Experience:

  • High-school diploma.
  • Experience in fast-paced environment preferred. 
  • Union experience preferred.
  • Good communications and verbal skills. 
  • Good manners and people skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Good time-management skills and ability to multitask.
  • Detail-oriented and self-motivated individual.  
  • A team player and possessing the ability to work independently. 
  • Ability to travel as necessary. 

Starting salary range is $52,000 - $63,000, dependent on experience, with a strong benefits package including FICA reimbursement, 100% employer-paid health and welfare plan, union pension, 401(k), FSA, and vacation and sick leave.
