Communications Intern

****** 12-Week Internship with potential for ongoing extension, based on performance and productivity******

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education and Experience: High school diploma or equivalent. One year of general record-keeping or bookkeeping experience or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Licenses and Certifications: Applicants must possess a valid driver’s license and have reliable transportation for work assignments as needed.

Knowledge: This internship opportunity is open to college students interested in gaining hands-on experience in communications. The Communications Intern will support the Communications Division across various tasks, including:

  • Writing and editing content for web, traditional, and social media platforms
  • Creating audio and visual content
  • Developing presentations, pamphlets, graphics, and reports
  • Assisting in the implementation of communication strategies for projects and initiatives
  • Supporting event planning efforts
  • Assisting with media relations
  • Conducting departmental research and performing administrative duties

Desired Skills & Qualifications: The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Basic design knowledge and familiarity with design principles
  • Experience with social media platforms and analytics
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
  • Attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Interest in public service

Mental and Physical Abilities: Ability to maintain regular, predictable and punctual attendance. Limited amount of physical effort required associated with walking, standing, and lifting and carrying light objects from 5% to 50% of work time, depending upon the specific assignment.

Working Conditions: This position requires a flexible schedule and may involve assignments in various locations to support communication needs. Work may occasionally occur outside regular business hours or on weekends. Candidates should be able to: 

  • Bend, stoop, reach, stand, and move between work areas regularly
  • Sit and use a computer for extended periods
  • Operate a keyboard, handle paper documents, and use cameras or audiovisual equipment
  • Read digital and printed materials with sufficient near vision acuity
  • Communicate effectively in person and by phone
  • Lift and carry items weighing up to 25 pounds
