Description
Kentucky Public Pensions Authority (KPPA) is currently seeking a Staff Attorney I for the Division of Advocacy. Located in Frankfort, Kentucky, KPPA is responsible for the daily administration of three state administered retirement systems with nearly $25 billion in combined assets. These systems have a membership of approximately 433,000 state and local government employees in the Commonwealth of Kentucky, including state employees, state police officers, city and county employees, as well as non-teaching staff of local school boards and regional universities.

Key Responsibilities:
- Litigates KRS Chapter 13B administrative hearings, primarily involving disability claims.
- Conducts case investigation, discovery, depositions, and cross-examination of witnesses.
- Researches, interprets, and utilizes retirement statutes, regulations, and case law. Performs legal writing.
- Prepares legal opinions and responds to member inquiries.
- Reviews various legal documents for approval such as Divorce Decrees, Powers of Attorney, Qualified Domestic Relations Orders, and Guardianship/Conservatorship Orders.
- Assists with debt collection.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): Must be admitted to practice law and in good standing in the Commonwealth of Kentucky OR comply with Kentucky Supreme Court Rule (SCR) 2.111 (limited certification of admission to practice), SCR 2.112 (attorney participants in defender or legal services programs), SCR 2.116 (supervised practice), or SCR 2.117 (practice pending admission). Must maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this job classification. Employing agency is responsible for ensuring employee possesses and maintains required licensure(s), certification(s) or other credentials.
Working Conditions
Duties are performed primarily in both office and courtroom settings. Travel is required.
Probationary Period
This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
