Director of Counseling Services


Position Purpose
Assist in the implementation and administration of the school district's Counseling Services programs, and services in the area of school counseling, child growth and development, and college and career in conformance with district policies and state objectives, as well as applicable law. 

Essential Functions

  • Assists in the preparation of the budget related to Counseling Services programs.
  • Assists in the supervision of employees in responsibility areas, including the recruitment, selection, training, professional development, observation and evaluation of staff under areas of responsibility; makes recommendations regarding goals and corrective action.
  • Coordinates and attends meetings with district staff and parents, serves on committees, and conducts professional development as needed to fulfill responsibilities.
  • Coordinates Crisis Intervention Teams and participates as a member as needed.
  • Acts as the Test Coordinator for the following: AP, PSAT and SAT.
  • In conjunction with the Supervisor of Athletics, oversees NCAA requirements and assurance compliance.
  • Will assist when needed, in the development and implementation of the Master Schedule.
  • McKinney-Vento liaison for the District.
  • Initiates and maintains relationships with Community Agencies and Resources.
  • Coordinates programming for at-risk students (ASPIRE).
  • Will plan a series of evening programs for Counseling Services and will represent the District at these programs.
  • Oversees Scholarship and Awards Program.
  • Reviews department goals and data on a consistent basis, and identifies any disproportionality in the level of services to all students.
  • Evaluate and revise policies relevant to Counseling Services.
  • Provides oversight and coordination of Section 504 Plans, ensuring compliance with federal and state regulations.
  • Manages the Home Instruction process, including referrals, provider assignments, and monitoring of services.
  • Oversees the district’s Intervention and Referral Services (I&RS) process, supporting early identification and coordinated interventions for students in need of academic, behavioral, or health-related support.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, as well as differentiates instruction based upon student learning styles and behavioral management methods.
  • Knowledge of best practices in administration, program evaluation and staff supervision.
  • Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis and the formulation of action plans.
  • Knowledge of principles in psychology, social work and school counseling.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding students, and staff, including Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act, IDEA, and FERPA.

Qualifications Profile

  • NJ Director of School Counseling Services Certificate or Supervisor Certificate.
  • Masters Degree from an accredited college or university.

 

Experience

 

  • Experience in Supervision of Counseling at the high school level preferred.
