College Intern, Safer Routes to School

POSITION SUMMARY

The mission of the Safe Routes to School Intern is to support the Department of Mobility & Infrastructure in expanding programming by increasing the number of students who walk and bike to school safely. This intern will play a key role in assisting with developing and implementing initiatives focused on education, community engagement, and safety improvements. Through this work, the intern will help foster healthier, more connected communities by promoting safe, active transportation options and encouraging student participation.

The goal of the Safe Routes to School program is to:

  • Educate school aged children in safe walking and biking practices.
  • Encourage children to use an active mode of transportation.
  • Engage with community members and organizations to provide the guidelines and support they need in order to develop Safer Routes to School.
  • Provide engineering recommendations for improvements around schools such as signage, crosswalks, and sidewalks.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of program activities and engineering improvements.

REQUIREMENTS

Qualifying Requirements
Your City of Pittsburgh application will be reviewed and your work experience and education/training will be evaluated to determine if you meet the qualifying eligibility requirements listed below for this position.  You will be sent an eligibility letter regarding your eligible/ineligible status.

 

  • WORK EXPERIENCE: None required for this position.
  • EDUCATION/TRAINING: Must be currently enrolled and taking classes in an accredited college or university undergraduate or graduate program; OR have graduated within the last twelve (12) months.
  • EQUIVALENCY: None permitted for this position.


Preferred Skills

  • Demonstrated strong computer and writing skills, including experience managing content on social media platforms.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to build positive relationships with diverse audiences.
  • Experience working with children and youth in instructional roles such as camp counselor, classroom assistant, or similar settings.


 

 

CIVIL SERVICE EXAMINATIONS

 

If you meet the qualifying requirements listed above, you will be sent a letter of admission (when applicable) for the following examination(s). You must pass the written and/or performance examination(s) in order to have your name placed on the official Civil Service eligibility list for this position. Candidates who receive job offers must pass a medical examination (when applicable) prior to start date.

POSITION DUTIES

 

  • Assists with the coordination of key program related activities including, but not limited to, Walk & Roll to School Day, Safety Town, and Safety Week.
  • Assists with administrative duties, which include communicating with school administrators, teachers, community partners, parents, DOMI staff and other City of Pittsburgh staff.
  • Assists in the planning and execution of meet-up activities, which includes setting-up and breaking down equipment.
  • Collaborates with other team members.
  • Develops age-appropriate lesson plans and activities for school aged students in collaboration with the Program Coordinator.
  • Acts as a program representative and attends partner and community meetings and engagements.
  • Recruits volunteers and engages new partners utilizing an assortment of methods, including telephone, email, social media and in person community events.
  • Assists with writing narrative reports to highlight program outcomes and successes for grants, sponsorships, communities and leadership.
  • Participates in on-site programming at schools in the City of Pittsburgh during the academic school year.
