Instructional Coach-Elementary
GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Under the direction of the principal and the curriculum
department, the Instructional Coach, having both content and instructional expertise, will
work as a colleague with classroom teachers to support student learning and teacher
practice. The Instructional Coach will focus on individual and group professional
learning that will expand and refine the understanding about researched-based effective
instruction for teachers. The Instructional Coach will provide personalized, one-to-one
teacher support based on individualized teacher goals and identified needs.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
• Support the mission and vision of Henry County Public Schools.
• Serve as a liaison between the school and the Department of Curriculum and
Instruction by attending monthly curriculum meetings and providing professional
learning with a focus on improving student achievement.
• Assist teachers in aligning their teaching with appropriate standards, curriculum
and assessments.
• Ability to infuse technology into curriculum and instruction.
• Create positive relationships with teachers and administrators.
• Communicate and demonstrate researched-based instructional practices that
result in increased student performance.
• Manage change productively and handle other tasks as assigned.
• Provide individualized, classroom-based coaching to instructional staff to support
them in implementing good instructional practices.
• Serve as an instructional leader within the school.
• Provide organized, individual and/or group learning opportunities for teachers as
needed.
• Provide support in analyzing student assessment data.
• Assist teachers with instructional decisions based on assessment data when
requested.
• Assist teachers with specific classroom activities when requested.
• Analyze data and assist in development of yearly school improvement goals.
• Provide support for classroom motivation and management strategies.
• Assist teachers in creating materials that are in alignment with curriculum.
• Provide curriculum support training and resources.
• Provide assistance in researching instructional and/or curriculum issues.
• Model and coach instructional methods in a variety of settings (whole group and
small group) and provide follow-up support.
• Participate in collaborative instructional planning.
• Conduct classroom visitations and provide feedback to teachers and
administrators on the school’s instructional programs.
• Provide encouragement and emotional support to teachers.
• Manage time and schedule flexibly to maximize teacher schedules and learning.
• Work positively toward meeting identified district and building improvement goals.
• Assist with development of district curriculum, instruction and assessments.
• Develop and maintain a confidential, collegial relationship with teachers.
• Possess an understanding of when to contact administrators regarding
issues of safety/ethics.
• Perform instructional duties as assigned by the Principal and the Director of K-12
Instruction.
• Participate fully in professional learning opportunities for coaches, including peer
observations, professional research and reading, and inquiry sessions.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
The candidate must possess:
• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
• Current Virginia teaching license.
• Minimum of five years of successful teaching experience
• Demonstrated knowledge of Virginia Standards of Learning
• Experience in research-based instructional practices
• Extensive knowledge of and experience in Henry County instructional initiatives,
conditions of learning and assessment-driven instruction.
• Demonstrated ability to develop positive and collaborative relationships with
teachers and administrators.
• Effective communication, collaboration and interpersonal skills for developing
an environment with a common instructional focus, built upon Henry County
Schools’ initiatives and expectations
• Outstanding presentation and facilitation skills
• Ability to design, deliver and facilitate a quality professional learning and
reflection process for administrators and teachers
• Strong organizational skills and efficiency in meeting deadlines
• Ability to serve as a positive collaborative team member
• Ability to effectively incorporate instruction-driven technology into the curriculum
The preferred candidate will have a minimum of five years teaching experience in
Henry County Public Schools, hold an advanced degree and extensive knowledge of
instructional strategies and delivery in reading, writing, literacy development and math.
