Job Position: Health Scholars Mentor


Location: University Circle Area

 

Program: UH Health Scholars Program

 

Duration: June 9th-June 11th (mentor orientation) & June 16th-July 11th (program dates)

 

Compensation: $2500 Stipend

 

About the Opportunity

As a Health Scholars Mentor, you will play an essential role in advancing the UH Health Scholars Program by mentoring students from 8th to 12th grade as they pursue rewarding careers in healthcare. This is an exciting opportunity to leave a lasting impact on the future of healthcare while cultivating leadership, education, and life skills among youth.

 

Roles & Responsibilities
As a Health Scholars Mentor, you will:

  • Support Scholar Development: Collaborate with program staff to ensure the holistic development of scholars, guiding them in social/emotional growth, executive functioning skills, and exposure to academic excellence.
  • Oversee Scholar Activities: Manage and support scholars’ participation in a wide variety of activities including clinical shadowing, lectures, artistic expression, group work, and community service projects.
  • Contribute to Program Design: Assist in the development, coordination, and execution of a curriculum and extracurricular initiatives designed to engage and inspire scholars.
  • Foster Leadership: Create and facilitate leadership opportunities that empower scholars to develop key life and career competencies.
  • Attend Training & Events: Demonstrate unwavering commitment by attending all required training sessions and program-related events.
  • Serve as a Role Model: Act as a source of inspiration and advocacy for scholars, supporting their academic and professional growth.

 

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum age of 18 years and possession of a high school diploma or G.E.D.
  • U.S. citizenship or lawful permanent resident status
  • Enrollment in a science or health-related bachelor’s degree program with a strong interest in healthcare.
  • Proficiency in effective communication, with the ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, including empathy, creativity, and organizational abilities.
  • Basic computer literacy

 

Preferred Attributes

  • Prior mentoring experience, particularly with marginalized youth, and a demonstrated commitment to their success.
  • A history of volunteerism and community involvement.
