The Herron Classical Schools network operates with the authority to make decisions about all aspects of our schools and is overseen by its own board of directors. As Innovation schools, we partner with IPS to give students a broader base of resources while maintaining our status as tuition-free charter schools.

Job Summary

The Department Chairperson provides instructional leadership for the assigned academic discipline. The Department Chairpersons’ direct supervisor is the Director of Curriculum and Instruction, while also reporting to, and supporting, the Heads of School of each high school campus.

Job Responsibilities

  • Lead the management of curriculum and instruction for the assigned academic discipline to ensure the following:
  • Instruction is effectively delivered and supports the HCS mission and classical model, IDOE standards, and departmental goals and objectives.
  • Overall vision and delivery of curriculum aligns and supports the mission and core values of HCS.
  • Curriculum complies with IDOE standards, as well as Advancement Placement and/or Dual Credit requirements (when applicable).
  • Curriculum is accurately documented and properly aligned across all academic subjects and grade levels.
  • Curriculum and instruction reflects current best practices and developments in each academic discipline.
  • Content delivery and measurement of students’ mastery is consistent when a specific class is taught by multiple teachers and across multiple campuses.
  • Mastery assessments are constructed to properly measure the learning process and are aligned across multiple teachers and across multiple campuses (when applicable).
  • Classroom management and instruction provides the best possible opportunities for student learning and successful completion of graduation requirements.
  • Monitor teachers’ gradebooks, ensuring gradebooks align with established grading policies; analyze trends in grades and appropriateness of assignments; facilitate the use of student data in order to inform instruction and planning and to ensure student mastery of content.
  • Monitor teachers’ use of an online learning management system that meets and is consistent with the minimum requirements as determined by Leadership, and is a valuable and useful tool for students and families.
  • Work collaboratively with the Director of Curriculum & Instruction and the Heads of School to evaluate teacher effectiveness, provide instructional support and coaching to teachers in the assigned department, and contribute to staffing discussions based on teacher evaluations.
  • Collaborate with the Heads of School to recommend course offerings and appropriate teacher assignments for each academic year.
  • Assist with the recruiting and hiring of new teachers.
  • Assist with, and at times lead, the onboarding process for new teachers by training them on HCS philosophies, methodologies, and systems; provide access and orientation to curriculum materials; provide other appropriate supports necessary to enhance the teacher’s ability to be successful at HCS .
  • Assist in the planning and delivery of professional development for all teachers.
  • Facilitate and lead departmental meetings for assigned discipline.
  • Coordinate with the Director of Curriculum & Instruction to purchase and maintain inventories of textbooks, equipment, and other instructional materials.
  • Coordinate the completion and submission of records regarding student data, textbook accountability, end of school year processes, and other requested information and data.
  • Manage the department in a manner that promotes positive and productive relationships between students, families, faculty, staff, administration, and other stakeholders.
  • Inform the Heads of School and other Executive Leadership team members of emerging issues as they relate to assigned duties.
  • Attendance at scheduled faculty meetings, professional development and other sessions, as determined by the Director of Curriculum & Instruction and Heads of School.
  • Attendance at events scheduled outside of the teaching day that include, but may not be limited to, Parent Orientation, Meet the Teacher Night, Parent-Teacher Conferences, Open House, Hiring and Recruitment initiatives, Advancement opportunities, Symposium, and Graduation.
  • An expectation of professional and ethical conduct and professional growth throughout the year.
  • Collaboratively work with Executive Leadership to support the policies, guidelines, and procedures for Herron Classical Schools.
  • Collaborate with Executive Leadership and perform necessary and appropriate leadership duties during the summer, including duties relating to the hiring, onboarding, and retainment of teachers; assist with network advancement needs.
  • A teaching assignment of 180 days; teach 3 to 4 sections in assigned academic discipline.

Outcomes/Measures of Success

  • Evaluate teachers within the assigned department using the Herron Classical Schools evaluation rubric twice - once in the fall, once in the spring.
  • Observe and provide coaching feedback to newly hired teachers within the assigned department eight times in the school year (at minimum).
  • Monitor and provide feedback concerning gradebooks, curriculum documentation, and Google Classroom to teachers within the assigned department on a weekly basis.

Additional Education/Knowledge/Skills Requirements:

  • Hold a bachelor’s degree in an appropriate academic discipline; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Hold and maintain Indiana state educator license in the appropriate academic discipline.
  • Have at least five (5) years experience teaching in the appropriate academic discipline and been rated Highly Effective for the most recent two (2) yearly evaluations.
  • Have demonstrated leadership in the field of education.
