Marketing and Communications Intern

We are Secure Community Network (SCN), a nonprofit 501(c)(3) serving as the official safety and security organization of the Jewish community in North America. We are hiring a Marketing and Communications Intern to join our team and support the organization's marketing and communications efforts, focusing on digital content creation, expanding capacity for media outreach, website maintenance, internal copy updates, and departmental organization and record-keeping. This role provides hands-on experience in public relations, media strategy, digital communications, and strategic messaging aligned with Secure Community Network's mission.

This is a summer internship with an anticipated work schedule of 15-20 hours per week. Our office is located in Chicago, however if you are outside the Chicago area, remote opportunities may be available.

WHAT YOU WILL DO:

  • Support monitoring for media coverage, including news and social media platforms, to inform communications strategy.
  • Assist with drafting content for press releases, social media posts, and pitches.
  • Lead content calendar updates and coordination to ensure seamless public product distribution and bolster social media content to enhance SCN's online presence.
  • Help maintain and upkeep media contact lists for targeted communications outreach.
  • Support the development and execution of special communications projects.
  • Assist in the preparation of materials and coordination efforts for events, webinars, conferences, and meetings.
  • Attend and contribute to team meetings and take notes to ensure consistent and accurate minutes to share with the team afterward.
  • Conduct research on new media opportunities, including inquiries, proactive outreach efforts, and targeted expansion into new media spaces like podcasts.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Currently enrolled in a degree seeking program or a recent graduate with a bachelor's degree in communications, public relations, journalism, marketing, digital media, or a related field.
  • Previous internship or related experience in communications, media, public relations, or marketing preferred but not required.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Familiarity with major social media platforms, including LinkedIn, Facebook, X, Instagram, YouTube.
  • Interest in and understanding of news media operations and basic public relations practices.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and familiarity with digital content creation and management tools (e.g., Canva, Adobe Creative Suite).
  • Organized and detail-oriented, capable of managing multiple tasks and projects.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.

The Secure Community Network (SCN), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, is the official homeland safety and security organization of the Jewish community in North America. Founded in 2004 under the auspices of The Jewish Federations of North America and the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, SCN serves as the central organization dedicated exclusively to the safety and security of the American Jewish community, working across 146 federations, 50 partner organizations, over 300 independent communities, and other partners in the public, private, nonprofit, and academic sectors. This internship offers a stipend of $700 per month, which will be prorated for any partial month completed, and is intended as general educational assistance for interns.
