About the role:
Food writer, entrepreneur, and podcast host Catherine Smart is looking for a dynamic
social media strategist local to the Boston area to help grow an engaged social media
following to build community and grow the audience for the Talking to Smart People
Podcast, and the Smart Cooks Substack newsletter.
We are a small but mighty women-owned operation looking for a smart, capable,
empathetic, hard-working teammate. The ideal candidate will help us grow our IG,
Substack, Podcast and YouTube audiences through channel-specific strategy,
channel-specific content planning & creation, and community management. To thrive in
the position we need a hyper-organized candidate with the right technical skills who is
also passionate about food and thrives in a fast-paced, ambiguous, and often

We’re looking to start our strategist at 10 hours per week and compensate at $20/hour
with the opportunity to grow into a more senior role as our business grows. This is an
exciting opportunity for a senior-level student, recent grad or seasoned pro to be at the
ground level of an independent media start-up that’s poised for major growth. As a team
member you’ll be responsible for real portfolio-building, and business-growing work –
not going on coffee runs!
Role & Responsibilities:
Social Media Management:
- Assist in developing a social media strategy to increase followers, likes,
and overall engagement, and help maintain the brand’s social media voice
across platforms - Build and manage the monthly social media calendar
- Assist in brainstorming creative content, marketing ideas, and
collaborations - Develop creative and compelling content for social media, including
graphics, images, and videos (interest and experience creating engaging
food / cooking videos a plus) - Use CapCut, Canva, and basic video editing tools to help create content
- Assist with copy for social media posts and marketing materials as needed
- Work with podcast production team to pull compelling content from
podcast to use in social media. - Analytics and Reporting:
- Develop an understanding and aptitude for platform analytics tools to track
and analyze social media performance - Prepare regular reports on key metrics, providing insights and
recommendations - Monitor and report on the effectiveness of marketing campaigns
Research: - Conduct market research to identify trends and opportunities in the
food/podcast/newsletter space (including but not limited to events,
sweepstakes, social media promotions, email content swaps, etc) - Research competitors and industry best practices
- Stay informed about the latest developments in social media marketing /
digital marketing
Skills:
- Have a deep understanding of social platforms (especially Instagram,
Substack, and YouTube) and stay informed of platform updates, features,
trends, platform-specific best practices, algorithms, etc. - Have strong written and verbal communication skills with proficiency in creating
engaging written content for social media posts - Ability to adapt communication style for different platforms and audiences
- Ability to interpret data and provide actionable insights
Basic graphic design skills using tools like Canva or Adobe Creative Suite - Love food and have an interest in working in the food industry (basic
knowledge of trends, food writers, bloggers, and influencers in the space is a
big plus) - Be a proactive communicator who isn’t afraid to ask for the support he / she /
they need and eagerness to take initiative - Be an independent creative thinker, but a team player
- Have strong time-management skills and thorough attention to detail
- Can thrive in an unpredictable, ambiguous, and fast-paced startup environment
- Requirements:
- This is a remote position but the candidate must be local to the Boston area
and be available to travel within Boston for content shoots / other events as
needed - Must have a computer and access to the internet
- Must be authorized to work in the US
About Catherine Smart
Catherine’s writing has appeared in The Boston Globe, Saveur, Departures and Serious
Eats; she is a recipient of The Les Dames Escoffier Legacy Award for food writing. She
is a former cast member of the Emmy-winning TV show Christopher Kimball's Milk
Street, and former contributor to Milk Street Radio. She also co-hosted two seasons of a
podcast for The Food Lens, a Boston-based food publication.
Currently, Catherine is host of the podcast Talking to Smart People, and author of the
weekly recipe newsletter Smart Cooks on Substack. She also co-founded and served
as CEO of the nationally distributed natural food brand, not just co.
Catherine lives in Somerville, Massachusetts with her husband Artie, their sons Jack
and Pete, and their rascally black lab Clementine.
